Chapter 2 - THE VOICE FROM THE COFFIN

The man in the recording was Henry Bennett.
Billionaire.
Founder of Bennett Medical Systems.
Garrett’s father.
Official cause of death:
Cardiac arrest during sleep.
The family physician, Dr. Stephen Cross, had signed the certificate.
Henry’s voice continued through the cathedral speakers.
“Three weeks ago, Audrey brought me evidence that Garrett and Samantha were moving hospital funds through a private maternity network.”
Audrey closed her eyes.
The memory returned.
She had discovered the transfers while reviewing household expenses.
Garrett used the family office to pay a clinic called Northfield Women’s Recovery Center.
The amounts were too large for ordinary medical care.
When she asked, he told her the payments were none of her business.
Then he hit her for the first time.
Audrey photographed the statements.
She brought them to Henry.
Henry believed her.
He promised to confront Garrett after the baby was born.
He died two days later.
The recording continued.
“If I die before speaking publicly, examine the lower lining of this casket.”
The cathedral erupted.
The funeral director protested.
The police officers ordered everyone back.
A detective named Claire Nolan entered through the side aisle with a search warrant already signed.
Audrey had sent her the recording before leaving the hospital.
Claire approached the coffin.
The gold lining looked seamless.
An evidence technician removed a hidden panel beneath Henry’s shoulders.
Inside was a black envelope.
A flash drive.
A medical vial.
And a handwritten note.
GARRETT KNOWS MAYA IS NOT THE BABY THE CLINIC PROMISED HIM.
Audrey stared at the note.
Garrett shouted:
“This is insane!”
Samantha moved toward the side door.
An officer stopped her.
Eleanor sat down slowly.
Her hat slipped sideways.
Claire opened the envelope.
Inside were embryo records.
Audrey had undergone fertility treatment after two miscarriages.
Garrett told her the embryo belonged to both of them.
The records showed otherwise.
The egg came from Audrey.
The sperm source was labeled HB-01.
Henry Bennett.
Audrey nearly fell.
“That’s impossible.”
Claire read further.
The sample had not been taken recently.
Henry stored reproductive tissue decades earlier before cancer treatment.
The clinic used it without Audrey’s knowledge.
Maya was not Garrett’s biological daughter.
She was Garrett’s half-sister.
The baby in Audrey’s arms was Henry Bennett’s biological child.
The true youngest Bennett heir.
The room became unreal.
Garrett’s face turned white.
Samantha whispered:
“He knew.”
Eleanor stared at her.
“You knew too?”
Samantha began crying.
She admitted the family trust contained a succession clause.
If Henry had another biological child, control of Bennett Medical Systems would transfer away from Garrett and Samantha.
The fertility clinic had been instructed to create a male embryo using Garrett’s sample.
Instead, someone substituted Henry’s preserved sample.
Why?
Henry’s note answered.
GARRETT PLANNED TO ABANDON THE CHILD IF SHE WAS FEMALE. I CHANGED THE SAMPLE TO EXPOSE THE CONTRACT.
Audrey looked at the coffin.
Henry had manipulated her body too.
He may have acted to expose Garrett.
He still used Audrey without consent.
No one in the family understood the word protection without ownership.
Then Claire inspected the medical vial.
It contained the same sedative found in Henry’s blood after an independent test.
Dr. Cross had declared the level therapeutic.
It was not.
The concentration could stop the heart.
Garrett had purchased the drug.
Samantha arranged delivery.
Eleanor had signed the private hospice authorization.
Three signatures.
One dead man.
Then the cathedral doors locked.
The lights dimmed.
The sound system cut out.
Someone had activated the building’s emergency security system.
A voice came through the speakers.
Dr. Stephen Cross.
“Detective, if you open that casket completely, the cathedral burns.”
The cathedral’s security archive revealed that Henry had recorded more than one message.
A second file was addressed to Eleanor.
“Do not protect the children from consequence again.”
Eleanor closed her eyes when the sentence played.
Years earlier, Garrett had assaulted a hospital administrator who questioned a billing transfer. Eleanor paid the settlement privately and moved the administrator to another state. She called it protecting the family from scandal.
Henry’s recording named the cost of that decision.
Garrett learned that violence created invoices, not boundaries.
Samantha learned that money could rewrite witnesses.
The family did not begin at murder.
It began with smaller events everyone agreed to contain.
Claire asked Eleanor whether she understood the hospice papers she signed.
“I understood they gave Stephen authority.”
“Why give it?”
“Henry had become suspicious of everyone.”
“Was he wrong?”
“No.”
“Then why place him under the doctor connected to the transfers?”
Eleanor looked toward Garrett.
“Because my son asked me to.”
The truth was not sophisticated.
Maternal loyalty had overruled judgment.
Then the forensic team examined the gold casket itself.
Its manufacturer had received design changes from Samantha.
Extra internal wiring.
A thicker base.
A sealed lower chamber.
She claimed the modifications supported temperature control.
The wiring connected to the cathedral system.
The casket had been built for destruction weeks before Henry’s reported death.
That meant the funeral plan did not arise in panic.
Someone prepared for a body, a recording, and a crowd.
The family had scheduled grief before confirming death.
Among the mourners, an elderly accountant named Martin Vale approached Claire.
He had worked for Henry for forty years.
Martin said Henry discovered that Bennett Medical Systems had purchased newborn identity records through Northfield.
Not medical data.
Identities.
Birth certificates.
Social Security numbers.
Deceased-infant records.
The company used them to create clean legal histories for children moved through the embryo program.
Maya and Hope were not the first.
Dozens of adults might be living under false origins.
The murder case was becoming an identity-trafficking investigation.
Then Martin handed Audrey a sealed card Henry had left with him.
On the front:
FOR THE WOMAN HOLDING THE BABY.
Inside:
DO NOT LET BIOLOGY MAKE YOU REPEAT OUR MISTAKE. CARE FOR THE CHILD IN FRONT OF YOU BEFORE CLAIMING THE CHILD ON PAPER.
Henry had understood the moral danger.
May you like
He had still caused it.
Audrey kept the card as evidence, not wisdom.
