Chapter 10 - Safe Can Have Cake

In the backyard, David helped set up chairs.
He had become the uncle who arrived early, stayed late, and no longer looked at his phone when conflict entered the room.
Robert was not invited.
Patricia was not either.
That absence did not ruin the party.
It made the party possible.
When it was time for cake, Lily stood beside Olivia.
Emma lit the candles.
The girls leaned close.
Lily paused.
For a moment, Emma saw the hospital room in her eyes.
Then Olivia slipped her hand into Lily’s.
“You ready?”
Lily nodded.
They blew the candles out together.
Everyone cheered.
No one froze.
No one measured which granddaughter mattered more.
After the cake, Lily found Emma near the back door.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Do you still have the phone from that day?”
Emma looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Does the call still exist?”
“Yes.”
Lily thought about that.
“Can we keep it?”
“For as long as you want.”
“Not because I want to listen.”
“I know.”
“Because I called and someone came.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Lily leaned against her.
“You came fastest.”
Emma wrapped an arm around her daughter’s shoulders.
“I always will.”
Lily looked toward the backyard where Olivia was laughing with frosting on her chin.
“Safe can have cake,” she said.
Emma smiled through tears.
“Yes, baby.”
The house glowed warm behind them.
No open front door.
No flashing ambulance lights.
May you like
No champagne glasses held by people pretending not to see.
Just a mother and daughter standing together while the party continued because this time, nothing needed to be hidden for it to be beautiful.
