Chapter 1 - The Anniversary Cake

Mara Ellison shoved the bedroom door open with her shoulder because her hands were full of groceries, an anniversary cake, and her sick four-year-old daughter.

She expected to find her husband asleep.

Or drunk.

Or angry that dinner was late.

She did not expect laughter.

Soft.

Intimate.

Coming from her own bed.

Mara froze in the upstairs hallway, Lucy half-asleep against her shoulder, tiny hands gripping the collar of her winter coat. The boxed cake pressed into Mara’s ribs. Grocery bags hung from her wrists, cutting red lines into her skin.

Then she heard a woman laugh again.

A woman wearing her robe.

Mara stepped forward and drove the bedroom door fully open.

Daniel jerked upright in bed, bare chest catching the warm lamp light, blanket gathered below his waist.

Beside him sat Vanessa Hale, polished blonde hair loose over one shoulder, smiling in Mara’s pale silk robe as if she had been waiting all night for this exact entrance.

Mara’s breath vanished.

The framed family photos on the dresser seemed to tilt in the room.

Her wedding picture.

Lucy’s newborn photo.

A beach trip from two summers ago.

All of them watching.

Mara lowered Lucy carefully onto her feet behind the stair railing and moved her body in front of the child.

“Daniel,” she said, voice shaking. “She’s wearing my robe.”

Daniel wrapped the blanket around his waist and stood, irritated more than ashamed.

“Mara, don’t start.”

Don’t start.

As if she had walked into an argument already in progress and not her marriage being murdered under her own lamp.

Vanessa tightened the robe belt slowly.

Mara looked at the anniversary cake in her hands.

White frosting.

Gold lettering.

Eight years, it said.

Forever, Daniel had asked the bakery to add.

Mara had picked it up after leaving urgent care with Lucy, because some exhausted, foolish part of her still thought bringing the cake home might save the evening.

Daniel stepped toward her.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

Mara ripped the cake-box lid open.

She gripped the cake board with both hands.

Planted her feet.

And hurled the entire anniversary cake straight into his face.

The impact was perfect.

Frosting burst across Daniel’s eyes, nose, mouth, and chest. His head snapped back. He stumbled into the edge of the bed, arms flailing as white icing slid down his suitless skin and onto the blanket.

Vanessa gasped.

Lucy whimpered behind the railing.

Mara stepped back immediately, putting herself between the bedroom and her daughter.

Daniel wiped frosting from his eyes.

“You’re insane!”

Vanessa stood, robe belt tight, contempt curling her mouth.

“He already chose me.”

Daniel reached aggressively for Mara’s wrist.

Mara jerked her arm free and backed up, shielding Lucy with her body.

Then footsteps came from the hallway.

Not hurried.

Not shocked.

Measured.

Mara turned her head.

Eleanor Reeves stepped into the doorway wearing a dark formal dress, silver hair perfect, cold expression untouched by the scene in front of her. In one hand, she held a thick leather document folder.

She glanced at Daniel’s cake-covered face without surprise.

Then looked directly at Mara.

“Maybe this is for the best.”

Mara stared at the folder.

Her fury went cold.

Daniel stopped wiping frosting from his eyes.

Vanessa’s smile faded.

Eleanor’s fingers tightened around the leather.

And Mara understood something that hurt worse than the robe.

This was not a mistake.

This was a plan.
