Chapter 14 - The dressing gallery became Emma’s room again

We did not tear the dressing gallery apart immediately.
For a while, I couldn’t bear to decide what should happen to it. Too much of the room felt contaminated—by Vanessa’s rituals, by my late arrival to the truth, by Lauren’s memory being twisted into something predatory. Yet leaving it untouched forever would have turned it into a museum of injury.
Emma solved the problem for me without meaning to.
One Saturday, about seven months after the hearing, she wandered into the gallery while the contractor was taking measurements to replace the cabinet. She stood in the center of the room with one of her sketchpads and asked, “Does it have to be about shoes again?”
“No,” I said. “It can be about whatever you want.”
She looked around at the mirrored panels and the long wall where the cabinet had been.
“Can we make it bright?”
We did.
The rebuilt room kept the walnut floors and cream walls, but the long shoe display became low bookshelves, art drawers, and a bench under the lighting. One mirrored panel stayed because Emma liked practicing dance spins in front of it. The other was replaced with framed prints she chose herself—Central Park in winter, a messy watercolor skyline, one abstract piece full of blue and rust.
I worried the change might feel like overwriting Lauren.
It didn’t.
Emma chose a small silver frame from Lauren’s old things and placed a candid picture of the two of them laughing at the beach on the shelf beside her paint jars. Not dominant. Not hidden.
Just present.
One afternoon I found Emma on the floor in that room again.
My entire body locked for a second.
Then I saw what she was doing.
She was painting.
Her fingers were covered in cobalt and yellow this time, not polish-black shame. She looked up and grinned as if she knew exactly what she had just done to my pulse.
“It’s okay,” she said. “I’m making a mess on purpose.”
I laughed so hard I nearly cried.

That was the first day the room stopped belonging to the worst thing that happened there.
