CHAPTER 1

The wheelchair hit the pool with a sound that ended the party.
One second, Howard Kingsley sat beneath the warm lights of his Beverly Hills garden, wrapped in a thin gray blanket, frail hands resting uselessly over his knees.
The next, his daughter-in-law leaned over him from behind.
Vivian Kingsley looked perfect in her designer dress, polished hair catching the glow from the chandeliers inside the mansion, one hand pretending to smooth the blanket over Howard’s shoulder.
To the guests, it looked tender.
To Howard, it felt like a warning.
Vivian bent close to his ear.
Her voice was low.
Cold.
“You should’ve signed when you had the chance.”
Then she shoved.
The wheelchair shot forward across the stone terrace.
Howard’s weak fingers jerked toward the wheels, but his body could not obey fast enough.
A guest turned.
Someone dropped a champagne flute.
The front wheels struck the pool edge.
For half a second, Howard saw the blue water rising toward him.
Then the chair tipped.
The old man and the wheelchair crashed into the pool with a violent splash.
The garden exploded.
Guests screamed.
Water surged over the pool lights.
The blanket floated up like a drowned shadow.
Vivian stepped backward, hands flying to her face with perfect timing.
“Oh my God! It was an accident!”

But before anyone could believe her, a man sprinted through the crowd.
Ethan Cole shoved past two stunned guests, kicked off one shoe, and dove straight into the pool.
He did not hesitate.
He did not remove his watch.
He did not look at Vivian.
He went under.
For three terrible seconds, the only sound was water.
Then Ethan surfaced with Howard in his arms.
The old man coughed weakly, water pouring from his hair and blanket.
Two guests knelt to help pull him toward the edge.
Vivian stood frozen, still wearing her fake panic, but her eyes followed Ethan’s other hand.
Because Ethan was holding something.
Small.
Black.
Dripping water.
A waterproof USB drive.
The garden went silent.
An older woman near the pool covered her mouth and whispered, “That’s the drive…”
Vivian’s face went pale.
Ethan climbed out of the water, soaked from head to toe, his sleeves clinging to his arms.
He held up the USB so everyone could see it.
Then he looked directly at Vivian.
No anger.
No shouting.
Just certainty.
Vivian took one small step back.
Her lips trembled.
For the first time since she married into the Kingsley family, she looked truly afraid.
Because Howard Kingsley had not gone into the pool helpless.
May you like
He had gone in carrying the truth.
And now the truth had come back alive.
