Chapter 1 - The Fountain Fall That Ended the Party

Celeste Monroe was still laughing when Adrian saw his mother fall.

From the balcony above the courtyard, he watched his fiancée place both hands on Elena Whitmore’s shoulders and shove her backward toward the marble fountain.

The sound came in pieces.

A gasp from the guests.

The slap of Elena’s shoes against wet stone.

The crash of water rising around her modest dark blue dress.

Then silence.

The entire engagement party froze beneath soft evening lights and white flowers.

Celeste stood at the fountain edge in a silver satin gown, diamonds glittering at her throat, her smile bright with cruelty.

“Your cheap clothes are ruining my aesthetic.”

Elena sat in the fountain water, soaked and shaking, one trembling hand covering her face.

She was sixty-eight years old.

Gray-haired.

Small beside the marble rim.

Dignified even while humiliated.

Adrian did not move for one second.

His phone was already in his hand.

He had been taking a call from the balcony, away from the guests, when he saw everything.

His shock disappeared first.

Then the warmth left his face.

He walked down the balcony stairs with a calm so cold that people stepped out of his way without being asked.

Celeste turned when she saw him.

Her smile flickered, but she kept it alive.

“Adrian, your mother slipped. It was so embarrassing.”

He did not answer.

He reached the fountain, removed his tuxedo jacket, and wrapped it carefully around Elena’s shoulders.

His mother’s hands shook as she clutched the fabric.

Water dripped from her gray hair onto the marble.

Adrian did not look away from Celeste.

His jaw locked.

His voice was quiet.

Dangerous.

“Did my mother slip?”

Elena lowered her hands from her face.

Her eyes were red.

Her mouth trembled.

But she did not lie.

“No.”

The courtyard seemed to stop breathing.

Celeste’s diamond necklace rose and fell with her nervous breath.

“Adrian, she’s confused. She lost her balance.”

Adrian took out his phone again.

Slowly.

Precisely.

Celeste watched him, confusion replacing her confidence.

He placed the phone to his ear.

When the call connected, his voice remained calm.

“Liquidate her trust. Audit Monroe Holdings.”

Celeste went still.

The words reached her before their meaning did.

Then her face drained of color.

Around them, wealthy guests stared in stunned silence.

Elena clutched Adrian’s jacket around her soaked shoulders as he stood beside her like a wall.

Celeste whispered, “Adrian…”

He looked at her as if he were seeing her clearly for the first time.

“You didn’t embarrass my mother,” he said. “You ended your empire.”

May you like

Only then did Celeste understand.

The engagement ring on her finger was not the most expensive thing she was about to lose.
