Chapter 1 - The Button in Elena’s Apron

The water hit Elena Brooks so hard that her glasses nearly came off.
One second she was standing beside the cream-marble foyer desk with both hands folded in front of her black-and-white uniform.
The next, Vanessa Cole emptied an entire metal bucket directly into her face.
Water exploded across Elena’s glasses, hair, collar, and apron.
She recoiled.
Behind her, the country club foyer glowed beneath warm afternoon light—tall windows, dark walnut accents, polished floors, and a sweeping staircase leading toward the executive level.
Vanessa did not care who could see.
“Clean it up, servant. That’s all you’re good for.”
Elena stood dripping.
Her jaw tightened.
But she said nothing.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You heard me.”
Elena’s right hand moved slowly toward the wet pocket of her apron.
Vanessa kept berating her.
Elena pulled out a small black remote.
One button.
She pressed it firmly.
Click.
No alarm sounded in the foyer.
No lights flashed.
Nothing appeared to happen.
Vanessa laughed.
“What, calling somebody to mop for you?”
Elena slid the remote back into her apron.
Water continued running down her face.
She took one slow breath.
Then another.
“Look at me when I’m talking to you.”
Elena remained silent.
Vanessa pointed directly at her.
“You people come into places like this and forget who pays your salary.”
Behind Vanessa, movement appeared at the top of the sweeping staircase.
Grant Brooks.
Black suit.
White shirt.
Tall enough that people usually noticed when he entered a room.
Vanessa did not.
She was still pointing at Elena.
Still yelling.
Grant descended rapidly.
Elena saw him.
She slowly removed her wet glasses with both hands.
For the first time since the water hit her, she looked directly past Vanessa.
Grant reached the bottom stair.
His face was calm.
Too calm.
“Who gave you permission to touch her?”
Vanessa turned.
Her expression changed instantly.
“Grant?”
He walked toward her.
She gave a nervous laugh.
“You wouldn’t believe what your staff—”
Grant slapped her once across the cheek.
Vanessa recoiled.
Her heel slipped against the damp marble.
She dropped to her knees, then collapsed sideways onto the floor.
Grant stopped.
No second strike.
No kick.
No further contact.
He stood over her, breathing hard.
“You just humiliated the woman who owns this place.”
Vanessa stared up at him.
The blood drained from her face.
Behind them, Elena remained soaked, holding her wet glasses in one hand.
Vanessa slowly looked toward her.
Not at the uniform.
At Elena.
And for the first time that afternoon, she understood the person she had called a servant had never needed permission to stand in that foyer.
May you like
Vanessa did.
