Chapter 10 - Dad’s Property

Wyatt did not push it.

He did not smash it.

He did not need to.

Brielle’s own hand knocked it down while trying to throw away the truth.

That was the thing his sons remembered.

Not revenge.

Not humiliation.

The truth does not always have to attack.

Sometimes it only has to sit beside the cake until the lie reaches for it and destroys itself.

On Wyatt’s forty-fifth birthday, Owen and Eli surprised him with a small cake at the cedar picnic table.

Chocolate again.

This time, Eli wrote the frosting himself.

It said:

DAD’S PROPERTY

The letters were crooked.

Wyatt stared at it.

Owen grinned.

“It was his idea.”

Eli nodded proudly.

“It’s legally intact.”

Wyatt laughed so hard he had to sit down.

Mara, who had been invited because she had become less attorney and more dangerous aunt, pointed a fork at Eli.

“That is excellent legal phrasing.”

Wyatt cut the cake.

On a cutting board.

Hannah’s knife mark remained alone.

Sunflowers grew by the barn now, taller and stronger than before.

The American flag moved near the porch.

The pasture opened wide under bright afternoon light.

No white gown.

No tiara.

No investors.

May you like

No sealed envelope.

Just two boys, one father, one cake, and land that still knew who loved it.
