Chapter 3 - The Scene Became the Lie

Meanwhile, Damian stood in the penthouse study with Cassidy unconscious in his arms and the bent sonogram at his feet.

The ambulance arrived twelve minutes later.

Cassidy was barely conscious when paramedics lifted her onto a stretcher.

Her hand caught Damian’s sleeve.

“Find her,” she whispered.

“I will.”

“No,” Cassidy gasped. “Now.”

Damian looked at her wound.

Blood had soaked the side of her dress.

“You’ll die.”

Cassidy’s eyes filled.

“She thinks we—”

“I know.”

“She’s pregnant.”

“I know.”

“She’s pregnant with twins.”

Damian closed his eyes for one second.

When he opened them, whatever softness had remained in him was gone.

Not toward Vivien.

Never toward Vivien.

Toward the world that had arranged this moment.

“I’ll find her,” he said.

But he did not.

Not that night.

Not the next day.

Not that month.

Cassidy survived emergency surgery.

The blade had entered beneath her ribs, narrowly missing an artery. She had lost enough blood that the surgeon said twenty more minutes would have changed the outcome.

Damian listened without expression.

Cassidy woke two days later.

Her first words were, “Did you find her?”

Damian shook his head.

Cassidy began crying before she fully understood she was alive.

“I told her,” she whispered. “I told her she saw the wrong thing.”

Damian sat beside her hospital bed, unshaven, eyes hollow.

“She didn’t hear you.”

“She looked at me.”

“Yes.”

“And she still left.”

“Yes.”

Cassidy turned her face away.

“I ruined her life.”

Damian’s voice was low.

“No. Someone staged that room.”

Cassidy looked back.

Pain made her honest.

“But I walked into it.”

The truth came out in fragments.

Cassidy had not come to the penthouse to meet Damian secretly.

She had come to warn him.

A week earlier, Cassidy found a private transfer file hidden in a shared charity database. Vivien’s signature had been forged on a series of foundation releases tied to offshore accounts. The money trail pointed toward the Volkov Foundation, but the pattern was wrong.

Too obvious.

Too convenient.

A frame.

Vivien was being set up to look like she had diverted charitable funds.

The person feeding internal documents to the thieves was Celia Hart, Vivien’s former assistant.

The person moving the money was Martin Greer, Damian’s chief financial officer.

But Greer was not only stealing.

He was staging a marital scandal.

If Vivien appeared guilty, Damian would be forced to distance himself publicly.

If Damian looked unfaithful, Vivien would become emotionally compromised.

If Cassidy was found in the middle of it, the sisters would destroy each other before the truth had to be defended.

Cassidy had found the first piece by accident.

Celia called her drunk and terrified.

“I didn’t know they were going to make it look like Vivien,” Celia whispered.

“Who?”

“I can’t say.”

“Celia.”

“He has people watching me.”

“Who?”

The call cut off.

Cassidy spent the next three hours tracing files she barely understood, then found a flash drive hidden in a package delivered to her apartment.

Inside were bank transfers, access logs, forged signatures, and one video clip from a parking garage showing Greer handing an envelope to a man Cassidy did not know.

She drove to the penthouse because Vivien was not answering.

She planned to give the flash drive to both of them.

She never made it cleanly inside.

A man followed her from the garage.

He grabbed her in the service corridor.

She fought.

He stabbed her beneath the ribs.

Cassidy escaped only because she smashed the emergency glass panel with her elbow and triggered a service alarm.

By the time she reached Damian’s study, she was already bleeding.

Damian caught her as she stumbled through the door.

He pressed his hand against her wound.

She tried to say Vivien’s name.

Then Vivien entered.

The scene became the lie.

The lie became Vivien’s truth.

Damian found the flash drive later inside Cassidy’s torn clutch.

Within three months, Martin Greer was exposed.

Within five, he was arrested.

Within eight, the forged signatures were proven.

Celia testified under protection.

The man who stabbed Cassidy was identified as a fixer hired to retrieve the drive.

Everything was solved.

Except the only thing Damian needed.

Vivien.

May you like

The twins.

The life that had vanished because truth arrived seconds late.
