Chapter 10 - In Her Name

Two years later, Ruth hosted dinner on a rainy Thursday.

Nothing special.

Chicken soup.

Bread.

Evelyn at the sink washing dishes in a black blouse she insisted was not too expensive for dish soap.

Michael drying plates.

Ruth sitting at the table with a cup of tea, watching them both.

The rain tapped the windows.

For a second, all three heard another night.

Another storm.

Another door locked.

Another room under fluorescent lights.

Then Michael placed a blue plate in the cabinet and said, quietly, “Mom?”

Ruth looked at him.

“Yes?”

“I’m glad you didn’t sign.”

She studied him.

It was a small sentence.

Maybe too small.

Maybe late by years.

But true.

Ruth nodded once.

“So am I.”

Evelyn turned from the sink.

Michael met her eyes.

Not asking to be forgiven.

Just standing there.

Awake.

Ruth smiled faintly.

“My house keeps surviving dramatic people.”

Evelyn laughed.

Michael did too, though his laugh broke halfway.

Outside, rainwater ran down the windows.

Inside, the lights were warm.

No handcuffs.

No briefcase on the table.

No deed papers waiting like a trap.

May you like

Only a mother, her children, and a house that had almost been taken by lies but remained exactly where Ruth Hale had left it.

In her name.
