Chapter 10 - Always Open

Before blowing out the candles, Lily looked at Marcus.
“Do you know what I wished?”
“You’re not supposed to tell.”
“I make my own rules.”
“Clearly.”
She smiled.
“I wished that if anyone ever closes a curtain on me again, I remember I can open a door.”
Marcus swallowed hard.
Then smiled back.
“That’s a good wish.”
She blew out the candles.
Everyone clapped.
Not too loudly.
Not like a performance.
Just enough.
Inside the house, blue curtains moved gently in the open window.
