Chapter 7 - The Woman Behind the Glass
Evelyn Voss had been inside the tower.
Security footage showed an elderly woman entering hours before the storm through a private garage beneath the building. She wore a dark wig, medical mask, and staff credentials issued to a foundation trustee. The system recognized the badge because Evelyn’s trust owned the vendor that programmed it.
She moved through Voss Tower without hurry.
She visited the executive floor, the clinic corridor, and Celeste’s memorial room. During the blackout, she remained behind the rain-streaked glass entrance, allowing the ceiling camera to capture only a blurred silhouette. After Marcus took the vial, Evelyn entered through a maintenance passage and replaced Lila’s ordinary necklace with the silver pendant.
The pendant contained a microscopic storage device.
On it was the complete molecular sequence of the poison.
Evelyn had placed the cure within reach while simultaneously stealing the physical sample.
The contradiction revealed her purpose.
She did not want Adrian and Lila dead immediately.
She wanted the antidote successfully produced.
Then she wanted control of it.
Dr. Vale began synthesizing the treatment using the pendant’s data. Federal laboratories verified the sequence independently. The process required six hours, during which the bridge treatment might fail.
Evelyn contacted Adrian on a secure line that bypassed tower defenses.
She explained without apology that Project Aster had never truly ended. Governments, private intelligence firms, pharmaceutical companies, and wealthy families had paid for selective access to delivery technology. Victor lacked discipline and nearly exposed the program. Celeste lacked realism and tried to destroy it. Evelyn preserved it.
She raised Julian to believe the company should be his. She encouraged Lucien Hart to continue his father’s research. She placed Marcus in situations where grief could be redirected. She watched Mara and her daughters for years, waiting to see whether the inherited antibody response survived.
Adrian’s poisoning was a controlled demonstration.
Lila’s poisoning was the activation phase.
Elara’s arrival at Voss Tower was not an accident. Evelyn’s agents allowed the sisters to escape each time capture seemed possible, guiding them toward Adrian while making Elara believe she had outwitted surveillance.
The storm, the open entrance, and even the message on Adrian’s phone were theater designed to compress decision-making and ensure the tower mobilized its resources.
Evelyn needed Adrian frightened enough to cooperate and strong enough to finance the cure.
She offered a bargain.
The antidote formula could remain with Adrian. Lila would live. Elara would receive protection and wealth. In return, Adrian would sign control of Voss Biotech and its secure laboratories to the family trust. Evelyn would continue Aster under a legitimate medical program.
Adrian recognized the language. Harm described as necessity. Control described as protection. Children described as future benefit.
He delayed his answer while Warren traced the signal.
The call originated from within the tower’s exterior window-washing system. Evelyn was suspended outside the seventy-first floor in a maintenance platform, hidden by rain and reflective glass. Her helicopter had landed on a neighboring roof. She entered the platform through a connecting service bridge.
She had placed herself where armed security could not approach without risking a seventy-story fall.
More importantly, she carried a remote device connected to the laboratory power system. If Adrian refused, she could destroy the developing antidote and erase the molecular sequence from the pendant’s storage.
Evelyn believed she had converted lives into leverage perfectly.
Elara listened from Lila’s bedside.
She saw Adrian’s suspicion become calculation, then something quieter. For months, poison had weakened him physically. The truth weakened a deeper structure: the belief that power meant control over outcomes. Evelyn had more preparation, more access, and fewer moral limits.
Adrian could not defeat her by becoming more like her.
He asked Elara what Mara would have done.
Elara opened the old notebook to a page where her mother wrote about failed experiments. Mara had discovered that the antibody response changed under emotional stress and could not be replicated reliably through forced exposure. The cure Evelyn expected to commercialize might work for Adrian and Lila because their immune systems had already adapted through inherited markers. It would not necessarily work for others.
Evelyn’s entire plan rested on an assumption.
Adrian told her the antidote was unstable and useless without Elara’s continued cooperation. He offered himself, the tower laboratory, and the company shares if Evelyn released control of the power system and entered the building.
Evelyn demanded proof.
Adrian allowed her to watch a live laboratory feed showing the synthesized compound failing its first stability test. The failure was real. Dr. Vale had not yet solved the final binding step.
Evelyn believed scarcity more than loyalty. She entered through the window platform under a temporary security agreement.
The guards did not arrest her immediately because she held the remote trigger.
She walked into the tower wearing a white raincoat, silver hair wet against her face, and the calm expression of someone returning to property she owned.
Adrian met her in Celeste’s memorial room.
Elara watched through a secure camera. Lila slept beside her.
Evelyn studied Celeste’s violin, the photographs, and the open safe. She appeared almost amused by the evidence preserved against her.
Adrian understood then that Evelyn did not see herself as a criminal hiding from truth. She saw herself as the survivor who had understood power correctly.
He placed the notebook on the table and offered the transfer documents.
Evelyn set the remote beside them.
Before she could sign, Julian entered.
He had escaped confinement using credentials hidden inside Victor’s watch.
He looked from his mother to Adrian and finally understood that both of them had been poisoned in different ways—Adrian through his body, Julian through a lifetime of manufactured resentment.
Julian reached for the remote.
