Chapter 7 - The Dramatic Version
A year after the broken wedding, Clara organized a small anniversary dinner.
Not of the wedding.
Of the day she started telling the truth.
Thomas came.
So did Admiral Hale.
Not Preston.
Not Vanessa.
At the dinner, Victor raised a glass of iced tea.
“To General Whitfield,” he said.
Thomas sighed.
“Victor.”
The admiral smiled.
“To Thomas, then. Who still outranks me in stubbornness.”
Thomas laughed.
Clara froze.
She could not remember the last time she had heard her father laugh freely in a room full of people.
That sound felt like a door opening.
Later, Thomas pulled Clara aside.
“I don’t want you spending your whole life apologizing.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
“I mean it.”
“I’m trying.”
He looked at her carefully.
“Trying to forgive yourself?”
She swallowed.
“Yes.”
He touched her shoulder.
“Good. Keep trying. But don’t use guilt as another way to make my face the center of your life.”
The honesty startled her.
Then freed her.
Her father did not want to become her shame in reverse.
He wanted to be loved normally.
Called on birthdays.
Invited to dinner.
Photographed without speeches.
Seen without being turned into a lesson every time.
So Clara learned that too.
Years later, people still told the dramatic version.
The grand cathedral chapel.
The stained-glass windows.
The polished wooden pews.
The bride in white lace stepping aggressively toward her scarred father.
You’ll ruin my wedding photos. You don’t fit the life I’m building.
The father lowering his eyes.
Vanessa lifting her glass.
Some parents are meant to be loved from a distance.
Preston standing smug beside Clara.
Maybe it’s best if he skips the ceremony.
The father nodding.
I understand.
The camera shifting to Admiral Victor Hale.
The recognition.
The rigid spine.
The step into the aisle.
The salute.
General…
The whole chapel realizing the scarred man they dismissed had once walked through fire for men who still stood because of him.
