Chapter 5 - You Start With Lily

By the next morning, the video had spread through the Whitmore family before anyone could spin it.
Not online.
Not publicly.
Claire refused to let Lily become a viral spectacle.
But within the family, within the law firm where Daniel worked, within the charity board Eleanor chaired, the audio traveled.
That child does not belong in my family.
Real children someday.
If you choose this, Daniel, you choose against your family.
The words sounded uglier when stripped of chandeliers and flowers.
Eleanor tried to claim she had been provoked.
The microphone disagreed.
Daniel came to Claire’s apartment three days later.
Not the home they were supposed to share.
Her apartment.
Lily was inside building a pillow fort with Claire’s friend Jenna.
Claire met Daniel in the lobby.
He looked tired.
Ashamed.
Smaller without the tuxedo and wedding lights.
“I left my mother’s house,” he said.
Claire nodded.
“I’m glad.”
“I told her she was wrong.”
“Good.”
“I should have said it then.”
“Yes.”
He swallowed.
“Can we fix this?”
Claire looked at him for a long time.
There were versions of herself that wanted to say yes.
The woman who had chosen flowers.
The woman who had written vows.
The woman who remembered Daniel dancing barefoot in her kitchen, making Lily laugh with a spatula microphone.
But there was also the woman who had watched him freeze while his mother crushed a grieving child in public.
Love did not erase that.
“I don’t know,” Claire said honestly. “But you don’t get to start with me.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“You start with Lily. Not by asking her to forgive you. Not by giving gifts. You start by understanding what your silence did.”
His eyes filled.
“How?”
“Therapy. Parenting classes. Legal boundaries. Time. And you never, ever ask me to make her smaller so your mother feels comfortable.”
Daniel nodded.
“I can do that.”
Claire’s voice softened, but only slightly.
“You can try.”
Trying was all she offered.
Not engagement.
Not forgiveness.

Not a second wedding date.
Trying.
