Chapter 10 - A Garden That Belonged to No One Cruel

And it was Eleanor, years later, standing in her small garden with sunlight on her white hair, watering tomato plants with the same steady hands that had once shaken under a wedding arch.

Daniel stood on the porch, watching.

“You okay?” he asked.

She looked back at him.

The green hose rested lightly in her hand.

“I am now.”

Then she smiled.

Not sadly.

Not politely.

Fully.

“You know,” she said, “these tomatoes are doing better than that marriage ever would have.”

Daniel laughed so hard he had to sit on the porch step.

Eleanor turned the water gently over the soil.

No guests.

No champagne.

May you like

No cruelty dressed in lace.

Just a mother, her son, and a garden that belonged to no one who had ever tried to wash her away.
