Chapter 6 - CLINIC TWELVE
Snow began before the convoy reached the northern county. The road narrowed through forest until a steel gate appeared behind a weathered sign reading HAVEN RECOVERY CENTER.
No public record listed patients.
Federal agents surrounded the property. Charles was ordered to remain in the vehicle with Ethan, but the boy refused to stay behind once he saw Ruth's scarf tied to the fence.
Inside, officers found empty rooms, restraints, destroyed files, and evidence of hurried evacuation.
In the basement, they discovered Rebecca.
She was alive, weak, and terrified of every uniform. When Ethan entered behind a paramedic, she stared at him as if time itself had walked through the door.
"My baby," she whispered.
Ethan did not remember her. He stood rigid until she described the small crescent-shaped scar above his knee and the lullaby she sang when Ruth carried him from the hospital.
Then he crossed the room.
Charles turned away, overwhelmed by a grief that contained joy and shame in equal measure.
Rebecca said Daniel and Ruth had been taken separately that morning. Victor intended to exchange them for the ledger and the original share certificate.
He had an accomplice still inside Charles's inner circle.
Before Rebecca could name the person, the building lost power.
Emergency lights flashed red.
A shot sounded from the upper floor—not aimed at anyone, but enough to create panic. Smoke poured from a records room.
Nolan led Ethan and Rebecca toward the exit while Lena searched the corridor.
Charles saw Dr. Miriam Holt move away from the evacuation route and enter a locked pharmacy.
He followed.
Miriam was removing a hard drive from a cabinet.
"What are you doing?"
She froze.
Then she told him the truth.
She had been Victor's accomplice.
Years earlier, Victor discovered she falsified medication records to protect Margaret's secret network. He used that crime to control her. Miriam signed Rebecca's false death certificate, altered Daniel's medical records, and supplied sedatives to Clinic Twelve.
"You treated my family while helping imprison them."
"I kept them alive."
"You kept them useful."
Miriam raised the hard drive. "This contains every patient, payment, and location. Let me leave, and you can have it."
Charles stepped aside as if agreeing.
Lena appeared behind Miriam and arrested her.
The hard drive revealed a private airfield outside the county. Victor had reserved a charter flight for that evening under Charles's name.
Agents reached the airfield minutes before departure.
They found Ruth bound inside a hangar.
Daniel was not there.
Ruth, barely conscious, gave Charles a message.
"Victor took him back to the gala."
"The hotel?"
She shook her head.
"The foundation anniversary broadcast. He wants Charles to confess."
That night, millions of viewers were scheduled to watch Charles announce new leadership for the Aldridge Foundation from the same ballroom where Ethan had appeared.
Victor did not intend to hide anymore.
He intended to rewrite the entire story in public.\n\nThe drive to Clinic Twelve forced Charles to confront towns he had previously viewed from helicopters. They passed boarded pharmacies, rusted mills, and a county hospital advertising a three-hour emergency wait. Project Haven plaques still stood in several places where no clinic had opened.
At a roadside gas station, a woman recognized Charles and asked why her husband died waiting for the cardiac unit his foundation promised. Security moved between them, but Charles stopped the guard.
He told the woman he had no answer that could repair the loss.
"Then don't give me an answer," she said. "Give the next person a hospital."
Daniel's ledger listed her county twice.
Charles wrote down her name himself.
Ethan watched from the vehicle. When Charles returned, the boy asked why the woman hated him.
"Because I stood on a stage and made a promise that became a photograph instead of a building."
"Are you going to build it now?"
"If the town still wants it, they will decide what is built and who controls it."

Charles almost laughed. Ruth had always spoken in sentences that sounded simple until they dismantled an excuse.
