Chapter 4 - She Held the Door

Vanessa stepped forward.
“Colonel Hayes, please. This has been hard on everyone.”
Robert’s eyes moved to her.
“Hard on whom?”
She faltered.
“On the family.”
He looked at Emily.
At Noah.
At the bruises.
Then back to Vanessa.
“This room contains my daughter, who is bruised and postpartum, and a newborn who was crying beside an untouched bottle. Choose your next sentence carefully.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t touch her.”
Emily flinched.
Robert saw it.
Not enough.
Too much.
“What did you do?”
Vanessa looked at Margaret.
Margaret whispered, “Nothing.”
Robert ignored Margaret.
“What did you do?”
Vanessa’s face cracked.
“I held the door.”
Emily began crying.
Robert’s body went completely still.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“She was trying to go downstairs. Mom said she’d fall with the baby. I thought—”
“You held the door,” Robert repeated.
Vanessa nodded, tears spilling.
“I didn’t know Mom grabbed her like that.”
Emily’s voice broke.
“You heard me ask for my phone.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“You heard Noah crying.”
“Yes.”
“And you held the door.”
Vanessa sobbed once.
“Yes.”
Margaret snapped, “Stop confessing to nonsense.”
Robert turned slowly.
“You are done speaking.”
Margaret laughed, sharp and ugly.
“This is my son’s house.”
Robert looked around the bedroom.
The bed.
The bassinet.
The bruises.
The locked-in silence.
“No,” he said. “This is the room where my daughter asked me not to leave her.”
That sentence changed the air.
Emily pressed Noah closer.
The baby’s crying softened at last, becoming hiccupping breaths against her chest.
Robert reached for the phone again.
This time, he picked up the nightstand receiver.
A house phone.
Old-fashioned.
Probably decorative.
It had a dial tone.
Margaret moved instantly.
“No.”
Robert looked at her.
The fear in her face confirmed more than anything she had denied.
He held the receiver.
Not dialing yet.
“What happens if I call for help?”
Margaret’s mouth opened.
No answer.
Vanessa whispered, “Daniel said not to let anyone outside see her.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Robert’s hand tightened around the phone.
There he was.
Daniel.
The missing husband.
The man who had left his mother and sister as guards.
“What else did Daniel say?”
Vanessa shook her head.
Margaret pointed at her.
“Vanessa.”
Robert’s voice cut through.
“Look at me.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“What else?”
“He said Emily was having postpartum episodes. He said if she called anyone, they’d think she was unstable. He said if she tried to take Noah from the room, we should stop her.”
Robert’s breathing slowed.
That was when people who did not know him became frightened.
His anger did not rise.
It narrowed.
Emily whispered, “Dad.”
He looked at her.
“Do you want medical help?”
Her answer came instantly.
“Yes.”
“Do you want me to remove them from this room?”
“Yes.”
“Do you want Daniel called?”
She began trembling.
“No.”
Robert nodded once.
“Good.”
Margaret’s face twisted.
“You have no right to decide that.”
Robert turned to her.
“I asked the patient.”
“She is my daughter-in-law.”
“She is my daughter.”
The words came like steel.
May you like
Margaret stepped back.
At last.
