Chapter 6 - What Emma finally told her father

That night, after the doctor finished with her hand and the formal interviews were delayed until morning because she was exhausted, Emma fell asleep in the guest room of Daniel’s sister’s house. Daniel did not take her back to the estate. He didn’t even consider it.

Grace stayed nearby, partly because Emma asked her to and partly because Daniel no longer trusted himself to understand the house without Grace’s memory beside his own.

The next morning, Emma spoke more clearly.

A child forensic interviewer met with her in a quiet office designed to feel safe rather than clinical. Daniel was not in the room for most of it, which tormented him, but he understood why. Children tell the truth more freely when they are not afraid of managing a parent’s feelings.

Later, the interviewer summarized enough for him to understand the pattern.

Vanessa grabbed Emma by the arms when she cried.

She made her stand in corners for long stretches.

She told her Grace would be fired if Emma “caused trouble.”

She sometimes called her weak, pathetic, or babyish.

She forced her to redo tasks until her hands were raw from soap or cleaning solutions.

And the line Daniel would hear in his sleep for months came next.

“She said pain helps girls stop acting spoiled.”

The hot water had not been a sudden invention.

It was an escalation.

Vanessa had been arranging flowers for a donor dinner. Emma accidentally dropped a ribbon spool, then cried when Vanessa yelled. Vanessa dragged her to the prep table and said if words didn’t work, pain would.

Emma also told them why she used the secret signal instead of simply saying, “She’s lying.”

“Because if I said it out loud,” Emma explained, “she’d say I was disrespectful.”

That sentence was so childlike and so devastatingly logical that the interviewer wrote it down twice.

Daniel sat in his car for ten full minutes after hearing the summary.

He cried once.

Then he called his attorney and told her he wanted emergency orders filed that day.

For Emma’s protection.

For residence.

And for Vanessa to have no contact with the child unless a court someday ordered otherwise.

The attorney agreed.

Then asked him a question he had already been dreading.

“What about your own conduct after the danger had ended?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

He knew exactly what she meant.

The two slaps.

The part of the story that belonged to him.
