Chapter 1 - This Wedding Is Over

Daniel Cross lifted his daughter’s veil and forgot how to breathe.
For one second, the bright luxury chapel disappeared.
The chandeliers.
The white roses.
The polished wooden pews.
The guests holding their breath.
All of it vanished.
All Daniel saw was Evelyn’s face.
His twenty-nine-year-old daughter stood in front of him in a white lace wedding gown, her brunette hair pinned in an elegant bridal updo, her veil trembling lightly around her shoulders.
Her left eye was bruised.
Her lower lip was split.
There were faint red marks around one wrist, partly hidden beneath the lace edge of her glove.
Daniel’s hand froze beside her cheek.
“Sweetheart,” he whispered, voice breaking before he could stop it. “Who did this?”
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
That was the answer before any words came.
Across from her, Adrian Vale smiled.
He stood at the altar in a black tuxedo, handsome in the clean, expensive way that fooled people who thought cruelty always looked ugly.
He casually straightened his cuff.
Then he laughed directly in Daniel’s face.
“I was teaching her how our family works.”
A sound moved through the chapel.
A gasp.
A whisper.
A prayer someone forgot to keep silent.
In the front pew, Adrian’s mother, Celeste Vale, did not look shocked. She sat in her champagne-colored gown, blonde hair perfectly styled, face cold with approval.
“She needed discipline,” Celeste said.
Evelyn flinched.
Daniel saw it.
And everything inside him went cold.
Not loud.
Not explosive.
Cold.
The kind of cold that comes after a man has spent his whole life learning exactly what happens when anger moves before purpose.
Daniel reached down and removed Evelyn’s injured wrist from Adrian’s grip.
Adrian still had his fingers around her.
In church.
At the altar.
In front of God and two hundred witnesses.
Daniel placed himself between them.
Adrian’s smile vanished.
“Move.”
Daniel did not.
Adrian lunged past him, reaching hard for Evelyn again.
Daniel moved once.
Clean.
Decisive.
He blocked Adrian’s forearm, pivoted with both feet planted, and drove one powerful front kick into Adrian’s upper chest.
Adrian flew backward just far enough to lose balance, crashed into a padded wedding chair, and sent it sliding across the chapel floor.
The room went silent.
No one screamed.
No one moved.
Adrian struggled to sit up, arrogance draining from his face as pain and panic replaced it.
Daniel kept one arm protectively in front of Evelyn.
His voice was low.
“Never touch my daughter again.”
Celeste rose from the pew, face pale with fury.
“How dare you?”
Daniel did not look at her.
He pulled out his phone.
On the screen, Evelyn saw the partial contact name before his thumb hovered over it.
Cross Legal—
Celeste saw it too.
Her face changed.
Not anger now.
Fear.
Adrian, still on the floor, stared at the phone as if Daniel had pulled out something far more dangerous than a weapon.
Daniel locked eyes with him.
“This wedding is over.”
Evelyn covered her mouth with one shaking hand.
May you like
Not because the wedding was ending.
Because for the first time in months, someone had said the truth out loud before Adrian could rename it.
