Chapter 3 - HANNAH’S VIDEO
I did not watch the drive alone. I called my attorney and my IA partner, Marissa Vale. We copied the drive, documented chain of custody, and verified the files. Grief does not excuse sloppy evidence. Then the first video played. HOA clubhouse parking lot. Hannah stood beside Margaret Hales. Alive. Same brown coat. Hair pulled back. Angry. Bryce faced them. Hannah said, “You threatened her over financial records.” Bryce laughed. “No one threatened anybody.” Margaret held an envelope. HOA ledger copies. Then Vera appeared. “What are you doing with private board documents?” Margaret answered: “Showing residents where the reserve fund went.” Then Raymond Sloan walked into frame. No uniform. Dark coat. Hannah turned. “Why is Internal Affairs command at an HOA dispute?” Raymond said: “I live here.” I had not known. He owned a house through an LLC. Hannah held up her phone. “I have Bryce threatening Margaret.” Bryce moved toward her. Cole stepped between.
“Back up.” Then Vera said: “Hannah, give Raymond the phone.” “No.” Raymond took out his badge. “It may be evidence.” Hannah answered: “Then write a report.” Silence. She knew process. Eventually she handed the phone over after Raymond promised a receipt. No receipt ever existed. The second file showed Cole in his patrol car. Raymond stood outside. Raymond: “This stays a neighbor dispute.” Cole: “There was a threat.” Raymond: “You want your kid’s school issue reopened?” Cole went silent. Then Raymond: “Fix the report.” Direct coercion. Then Vera approached Raymond after Cole turned away. The body camera kept recording. Vera whispered: “Margaret has copies.” Raymond: “Then get them.” Vera: “And Hannah?” Raymond: “She’ll get bored.” That did not prove murder. It proved conspiracy to suppress complaints. Another file showed Peter Sloan’s fence gunshot. Bryce stood nearby with a handgun. Cole asked: “Where’s the casing?” Bryce replied: “Why?”

Then Vera said one word: “Daniel.” Cole backed off. Report unfounded. Then Margaret told Cole: “They’re using reserve money for land options.” She claimed HOA reserves paid consulting fees to companies tied to Vera, Bryce, and Raymond. Then Marissa paused the video. “Thorne, this is bigger than HOA fines.” Yes. Then I asked Cole about Hannah’s crash. He said he was first on scene. Her car was already down the embankment. She was dead. Then: “Anything unusual?” He hesitated. “Driver-side rear tire was flat.” The crash report blamed hydroplaning. No tire note. Raymond arrived and said the tire likely blew during impact. Maybe true. Then Cole said: “There was a black SUV parked half a mile away.” “Did you report it?” “No.” Another silence. I wanted to hit him. Instead: “Leave.” Before he went, Cole said: “Vera knew you were reviewing complaints.” Then: “I think she told Bryce to scare you.” “Proof?” “Not yet.” He looked upstairs toward Ella’s room.
“But if they were willing to fire beside a three-year-old…” He did not finish. He did not need to.
