Chapter 7 - The Hospital Inside the Trap

The hospital locked down the entire pediatric floor.
Badges were disabled and reissued. Staff identities were checked against personnel records. Food, medication, linens, and even bottled water were screened before entering Chloe's room. Federal agents searched ventilation ducts, supply carts, and ceiling panels.
Yet the threat grew more dangerous because it no longer had a visible shape.
The attacker had been obvious once Harrison saw him. The person already inside could be a nurse who had comforted Chloe, a technician who drew blood, or an administrator who never entered the room at all.
Harrison refused to leave Chloe's bedside.
Cross tried to persuade him to sleep in a secure room across the hall.
"You are exhausted," the detective said. "Exhaustion creates mistakes."
"Then put a chair here."
"You cannot inspect every action."
"I can make sure she is never alone."
Chloe listened from the bed. "Daddy, I can watch too."
Harrison immediately regretted letting the conversation occur within her hearing. "You are not responsible for keeping yourself safe from adults."
"But I saw Grandpa before you did."
The truth of it silenced him.
Dr. Grant, a trauma specialist called in by Lena, helped them create a plan that gave Chloe control without burdening her. Every person entering would state their name and purpose. Chloe could stop any procedure. Harrison could verify medication labels. A trusted nurse named Maya Chen would coordinate care.
The structure calmed Chloe more than repeated promises.
Richard's attorney filed an emergency motion claiming Harrison had coached Chloe and unlawfully isolated her from family. The filing included old videos of Chloe sleepwalking.
The videos were real.
In them, Chloe wandered the upstairs hallway with unfocused eyes, bumped into furniture, and woke confused. Richard's defense argued the bruises resulted from these episodes.
Forensic review found the explanation hidden inside the footage.
Each recording began minutes after Richard entered Chloe's room carrying a cup. The timestamp metadata had been altered to remove that portion. Restored data showed he administered a sedative, waited for disorientation, then guided her into the hallway and activated the camera.
He had manufactured proof of the story he later used against her.
Harrison watched one clip only once.
Richard stood inches outside the frame, directing Chloe with a soft voice. She was six years old, eyes half closed, obeying because she believed adults knew what was happening to her body.
Harrison wanted the video destroyed.
Cross told him it might be the strongest evidence in court.
Truth demanded preservation of what love wanted erased.
That afternoon, Maya prepared Chloe's scheduled saline flush. She showed the sealed package to Harrison, scanned the code, and explained each step. Chloe nodded.
Before Maya connected it, Harrison noticed condensation inside the plastic wrapper.
"Stop."
Maya froze.
The package was supposed to be dry.
Security took it for testing. A pinhole had been made near the seal and covered with transparent adhesive. The fluid contained a concentrated AV compound.
The package came from a locked medication room accessed by six employees.
One was Dr. Marcus Webb.
He had not physically entered the hospital, but his medical credentials remained active in an old system used for remote supply authorization. Someone logged in under his name from a terminal in the building.
Agents checked the six employees. Five were located.
The sixth, pharmacist Daniel Kessler, had disappeared.
Kessler's home contained cash, an Aster Vale contract, and photographs of Harrison's family. His vehicle was still in the employee garage. Security footage showed him entering the hospital that morning and never leaving.
He was somewhere inside.
The building was searched floor by floor.
Hours passed.
At sunset, the fire alarm activated.
Red lights flashed. Doors automatically unlocked. Elevators recalled to the lobby. Staff began moving patients according to evacuation protocols.
Cross shouted into his radio that the alarm was false, but smoke began entering the corridor from a utility room.
Kessler had created a real fire to force movement.
Harrison lifted Chloe from the bed. Maya carried the portable monitor. Agents formed a shield around them as they moved toward the secure stairwell.
Halfway down, the lights failed.
Emergency illumination turned every face red.
Chloe buried her face against Harrison's shoulder.
A door opened below.
Someone in firefighter gear climbed toward them.
"This stairwell is compromised," the figure called. "Come with me."
The agents raised weapons.
"Remove your mask."
The figure stopped.
Then he threw a metal canister onto the stairs.
White vapor erupted.
Agents dragged Harrison and Chloe upward as the figure disappeared through the lower door. Maya covered Chloe's face with oxygen tubing while Harrison held his breath until they reached the next landing.
The vapor was irritant, not poison. Another diversion.
Kessler had not been trying to reach Chloe through the stairwell.
He had been clearing the pediatric floor.
When agents returned, Chloe's room had been searched. The IV pump was gone. So was the secure evidence bag containing her original blood sample.
Kessler needed the sample because it proved resistance to the compound.
Without it, prosecutors could still prove abuse, but the scientific fraud behind Aster Vale would be harder to establish.
Harrison understood the next move.
Kessler would take the blood to Richard's private laboratory and destroy every comparison sample.
Cross checked Richard's properties.
One facility remained unsearched: an abandoned cardiac research center beneath the Vance Foundation's rural retreat.
It was forty miles away.
Harrison looked at Chloe.
"You stay with Lena and Agent Reeves."
She caught his hand. "You're going after him."
"The police are."
"And you?"
He wanted to lie.
Instead he said, "I know the building. I can help them find the lab."
Her fingers tightened. "Promise you'll come back."
Harrison thought of every promise Richard had used as control. He would not offer certainty he did not own.
"I promise I will do everything I can to come back to you."
Chloe studied him, then nodded.
As Harrison left with Cross, a nurse found an envelope taped beneath Chloe's bed.
Inside was a photograph of Emily at the Oregon facility taken that morning.

On the back, Kessler had written:
One daughter survived. The other will not.
