Chapter 1 - THE PHONE VANESSA WAS AFRAID TO EXPLAIN

Warm afternoon light poured through the tall mountain-view windows of the Blake family’s luxury ski lodge suite in Colorado, turning the timber walls golden and catching the white peaks beyond the glass.

Vanessa Blake sat on the cream daybed with her newborn daughter swaddled tightly in her arms.

Eight-year-old Ethan stood beside her.

He was crying already.

A black smartphone was clenched in one hand.

Vanessa looked at him with open contempt.

Then, without warning, she swung one hand across his face.

The open-palm slap came fast and hard.

Ethan recoiled immediately.

His hand flew to his cheek.

“GET OUT. NOBODY WANTS YOU NEAR MY BABY.”

Ethan’s face crumpled.

He backed away from her, crying harder.

The newborn remained safely tucked against Vanessa’s chest.

Then the suite door opened.

Daniel Blake stepped inside.

He had been downstairs speaking with the lodge manager and still wore the pale-blue shirt and dark trousers he had put on that morning.

The moment he saw Ethan crying, he stopped.

“Ethan?”

The boy did not answer.

He walked straight toward his father, one hand still pressed against his cheek.

Then he raised the black phone.

“Dad… look what she did.”

Daniel took it.

His eyes moved first to the phone.

Then to Ethan.

The red mark spreading across his son’s cheek was impossible to miss.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You put your hands on my son?”

Vanessa shifted the newborn higher against her shoulder.

“Oh, please. He wouldn’t leave us alone.”

Daniel crossed the room.

He did not argue.

He carefully lifted the swaddled baby completely from Vanessa’s arms.

Vanessa immediately reached toward the child.

“Daniel, give her back.”

He turned away from her and placed the newborn gently into the white bassinet beside the bed.

The baby remained safe.

Daniel straightened.

Then he turned back.

Vanessa stared at him.

Her anger sharpened.

“Your pathetic little brat deserved worse.”

Daniel slapped her.

One hard, open-palm strike.

Her head snapped sideways.

Vanessa stumbled half a step and clutched her cheek.

The room went silent.

Ethan stood safely behind his father.

Daniel still held the black smartphone in one hand.

His voice came low.

Cold.

“Then pray that phone doesn’t show me anything worse.”

Vanessa looked at the device.

And everything in her face changed.

The arrogance disappeared.

So did the anger.

What replaced it was fear.

Daniel noticed.

Ethan noticed too.

Vanessa did not ask what was on the phone.

She did not demand to see it.

May you like

She simply stared at it as though she already knew.

And Daniel suddenly understood that the slap he had walked in on might not have been the beginning of the story.
