Chapter 6 - RACHEL'S CHOICE

The safe house was an abandoned ranger residence forty miles north of Briar.

It had one road in, dense forest on three sides, and no cellular signal. Federal agents installed cameras, motion sensors, and a portable encrypted communications unit.

Rachel hated it immediately.

Not because it was uncomfortable.

Because every locked door reminded her that the people who exposed crimes often became prisoners while criminals negotiated from secure rooms.

Ethan checked each window twice.

Rachel stood in the kitchen and watched him.

"You said no more secrets."

"There aren't any."

"Then tell me what you're thinking."

He stopped.

"I think the government plate belongs to someone connected to Kessler. I think they know the evidence is larger than Cole. I think they may try to frighten us into disappearing."

"Will it work?"

"No."

"You answered for both of us."

Ethan leaned against the counter.

"What do you want, Rachel?"

"I want to decide whether I stay."

The words hurt him, though she did not mean leaving the marriage.

She meant staying in the fight.

For months, Ethan had treated her as someone to protect. But Rachel had gathered half the witness statements. She had convinced Lacey to speak. She had found the first connection between Cole and the clinic.

She was not baggage.

She was a witness.

"I want to testify," she said.

"They'll attack you."

"They already have."

"They'll say you manipulated patients."

"Then I'll answer."

"They'll bring up my record."

"I know your record."

"Not all of it."

The room became still.

Rachel folded her arms.

"Then tell me."

Ethan looked toward the dark window.

During his final deployment, his unit received intelligence about a warehouse where kidnapped aid workers were being held. The information came through Daniel Kessler, then working as a contractor liaison.

Ethan led the assault.

The hostages were not there.

Instead, the warehouse contained weapons and financial records linking Kessler's company to illegal sales. Someone had expected Ethan's team to destroy the evidence during combat.

Ethan refused.

He secured the records and reported the deception.

Two members of his unit died during the operation.

Kessler blamed Ethan for deviating from orders.

Ethan blamed himself for trusting the intelligence.

"That's why he sold your file to Cole," Rachel said.

"He wanted me discredited."

"He wanted revenge."

Ethan nodded.

Rachel stepped closer.

"You carried that alone for years?"

"Yes."

"Don't do that again."

She placed his hand against her chest.

"You feel that?"

Her heartbeat was steady.

"I'm scared," she said. "But fear isn't the same as weakness."

The next morning, Rachel recorded a formal deposition describing Cole's threat at the clinic and the pattern of intimidation. She gave investigators copies of medical notes documenting injuries reported by several residents.

By afternoon, news helicopters circled Briar.

The state attorney general announced a joint corruption investigation. Sheriff Cole remained in federal custody. Four deputies were suspended. County Judge Martin Vale resigned before agents reached his office.

Then Lacey disappeared.

She failed to arrive for her interview.

Her apartment door was open.

Her phone lay broken on the kitchen floor.

A neighbor saw her being forced into a dark pickup with government plates.

The same prefix written on the diner receipt.

Agent Vance ordered the roadblocks expanded.

Ethan studied the map.

The truck had been seen heading north.

Toward the safe house.

Not because the kidnappers knew where Ethan and Rachel were.

Because the old mining roads near the ranger residence crossed the Canadian border through remote forest.

Rachel saw the conclusion in his face.

"You're going after her."

"Vance has teams moving."

"That wasn't my question."

Ethan opened the weapons case agents had provided.

Rachel picked up the medical bag beside it.

"I'm coming."

"No."

"No more deciding for both of us."

He looked at her for a long moment.

May you like

Then he handed her a radio.

They left together.
