Chapter 1 - The Older Marks

Camilla Rowan tried to slap a ten-year-old boy in a wheelchair because he spilled juice on her cream rug.

Rosa Alvarez got there first.

The penthouse living room froze around the sound of impact.

Not palm against child.

Forearm against wrist.

Rosa lunged between Camilla and Eli so fast the tray in her hand hit the hardwood floor. Her black housekeeper dress pulled tight across her shoulders. Her white apron twisted at her waist. Her forearm took the blow meant for the child’s cheek.

Eli flinched in his powered wheelchair, both hands gripping the armrests, wheels locked beside the long gray sofa.

His older brother Jonah stood behind him, one trembling hand clamped on Eli’s shoulder.

Camilla towered over them in her fitted cream blouse, blonde hair polished, diamond bracelet shining under the afternoon window light.

“Get away from me, you useless child!”

Eli squeezed his eyes shut.

Rosa planted both feet between Camilla and the boys.

“They’re children,” she said, voice shaking but firm. “You don’t hit them.”

Camilla’s face twisted.

She stepped closer and slapped Rosa hard across the cheek.

Rosa’s head turned sharply. Her bun loosened. Her shoulder recoiled from the force, and she caught the wheelchair handle to steady herself, but she did not fall.

She stayed in front of Eli.

She stayed in front of Jonah.

That was what Camilla hated most.

Not the defiance.

The witness.

Camilla grabbed Rosa’s uniform collar with both hands and jerked her forward.

Jonah’s fingers tightened around Eli’s shoulder.

Eli whispered, “Don’t.”

Then the open entry door became the only thing in the room anyone heard.

Footsteps.

Fast.

Controlled.

Nathan Rowan strode in from the hallway in a navy business suit, shirt collar open, face still calm because he had not yet processed what he was seeing.

Then he saw Camilla’s hands twisted in Rosa’s collar.

He crossed the room in three hard steps.

“Let go of her. Now.”

Camilla turned too late.

Nathan clamped one hand around her wrist and the other around her forearm. He tore her hands away from Rosa and forced her backward two firm steps.

Camilla stumbled, shocked more by the interruption than the force.

Nathan placed his body between her and the others.

Rosa straightened her uniform with trembling hands.

Her sleeve slipped.

Several older finger-shaped marks showed along her forearm.

Not from today.

Not from one accident.

Nathan saw them.

His anger changed.

It did not get louder.

It became worse.

Stunned.

Controlled.

Horrified.

His eyes moved from Rosa’s marked arm to Eli’s frightened face, then to Jonah’s lowered gaze.

Finally, he looked at Camilla.

“How long has this been happening?”

Camilla’s lips parted.

No answer came.

Eli looked at his father with tears gathering.

Jonah stared at the floor like a boy who had spent too long deciding silence was safer than truth.

And Rosa, cheek burning, forearm aching, stood between them all as if she had been standing there for months.

Because she had.
