Chapter 3 - THE FIRST ATTEMPTS
Bellini’s was not the first poisoning.
It was the first time Linda used enough to kill.
Seven months earlier, Emma developed hives after Sunday lunch at Linda’s home.
Linda served chicken casserole and said every ingredient was safe.
Emma’s face reddened.
Her eyes swelled.
James drove her to urgent care.
Linda blamed a new laundry detergent.
Four months later, Emma’s lips swelled after coffee in Linda’s kitchen.
Linda said the café creamer must have been mislabeled.
Two months later, Emma struggled to breathe after eating soup Linda delivered during a migraine.
James found the reaction frightening.
Linda called it anxiety.
Each episode stopped before an ambulance was required.
Each happened after food Linda controlled.
Emma’s allergist, Dr. Sarah Collins, noticed the pattern.
“Shellfish protein keeps appearing in your blood,” she said. “That does not happen from stress.”
Emma asked whether trace contamination could explain it.
“Yes. Once.”
“And three times?”
Dr. Collins did not answer immediately.
“Document every exposure. Keep your medication with you. Do not eat food from anyone’s kitchen unless you trust the preparation.”
Emma told James.
He listened.
Then called Linda.
He thought warning his mother would protect Emma.
Instead, it confirmed that the smaller doses were being detected.
Linda cried on the phone.
“After everything I do for her, she thinks I’m poisoning her?”
Emma had never used that word.
Not yet.
James apologized to his mother for hurting her feelings.
That night, Emma realized she was competing with a story older than their marriage.
Linda was the sacrificed widow.
James was the devoted son.
Emma was the woman making trouble.
The next week, Emma found her purse unzipped after Linda visited.
Her spare EpiPen had been moved to another pocket.
She told James.
He said Linda probably checked the expiration date.
