Chapter 10 - Leave the Curb Behind

For a second, Avery saw another street.
Another night.
Another version of herself standing in a soaked white dress with her arm across Becca’s chest.
Then Becca leaned against her shoulder.
“You okay?”
Avery looked at her sister.
Grown taller now.
Still sarcastic.
Still alive.
Still free.
“Yeah,” Avery said. “I’m okay.”
Across the booth, David smiled.
The rain kept falling.
But there were no flashing lights.
No green SUV.
No silent passenger.

No mother lowering a window and calling fear a conversation.
Only three people in a warm diner, safe enough to remember and strong enough to leave the curb behind.
