Chapter 3 - MARA’S SON

Mara asked to speak with me before police booked her.

Not alone.

Claire stayed in the room.

Mara’s hands shook so badly she had to hold the paper cup with both hands.

“I’m sorry.”

I said nothing.

“I should’ve stopped him.”

“Yes.”

“I tried once.”

“When?”

“Before the pit.”

“What happened?”

“Mom showed me the picture.”

“What picture?”

“My son.”

Twelve years earlier, Mara was twenty.

Unmarried.

Pregnant.

Linda called it a disgrace.

Stephen Cross arranged a private delivery.

Mara gave birth to a healthy boy.

She held him for three minutes.

Then she woke after heavy sedation.

Linda told her the baby died.

No body.

No funeral she could verify.

Years later, Linda showed Mara a photograph of a blond boy at a private school.

Alive.

Her son.

Linda said if Mara ever disobeyed, the boy would disappear permanently.

Every few months a new photograph arrived.

Proof of life.

Leverage.

That explained Mara’s silence.

Not innocence.

Fear.

“Did you know Daniel was going to bury me?”

“I knew he was building something in the yard.”

“When did you know it was for me?”

“That morning.”

“And you stayed?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Mom said if police came, she’d move my son before I could find him.”

I looked away.

Fear can explain.

It does not erase.

Claire asked what Linda wanted from me.

“Trust access.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she’s been talking about Sterling money my whole life.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Linda had built her family around the trust.

Then Mara revealed something worse.

Daniel was not Linda’s biological son.

Stephen Cross was.

Linda and Stephen had an affair before Richard’s crash.

Stephen trained Daniel from adolescence.

Trust law.

Corporate structure.

Inheritance language.

Daniel did not discover the Sterling plan after marrying me.

He had been prepared for it.

Claire obtained a warrant for Linda’s old property.

Mara remembered a hidden freezer room beneath the pantry.

Police found it.

Inside were birth records, preserved samples, trust maps, photographs, and twelve files marked by initials.

One file:

M.C.

Mother: Mara Carter.

Paternal source: RS-01.

Richard stared at the initials.

“RS?”

Claire answered after preliminary database review.

“Richard Sterling.”

My father looked sick.

Years earlier, during cancer screening, Stephen had stored reproductive tissue without Richard’s informed consent.

Mara’s son had been conceived using that sample.

Mara was not biologically related to Richard.

There was no incest.

There was theft.

Her child was Richard’s biological son.

My half-brother.

Another Sterling heir.

The boy was not only leverage against Mara.

He was a competing succession claim.

The school file named him Ethan Reed.

Age twelve.

Guardian: Stephen Reed.

A false surname.

Alive.

Then the school reported Ethan had been removed that morning.

A gray-haired woman collected him using valid guardianship papers.

Linda was already in custody.

Security footage showed the woman.

Richard stared.

“That isn’t Linda.”

“Who?”

“My sister.”

Catherine Sterling.
