Chapter 14 - Mara Refused Eleanor’s Last Attempt to Decide Her Future

Nathan called Mara into his office after the corporate settlements were signed.

“There is one more Eleanor matter.”

Mara sighed.

“I’m starting to resent that sentence.”

Nathan handed her a letter.

Not a will amendment.

Not a secret ownership certificate.

A job offer.

Eleanor had drafted it before entering hospice.

She wanted the independent trustee to offer Mara a permanent role managing the Whitmore family archives and residential properties.

Salary:

nearly twice what Mara now earned at the hotel.

Benefits.

Housing allowance.

Three-year guarantee.

Mara stared at the page.

“She planned my next job?”

Nathan nodded cautiously.

“She believed you were good at it.”

Mara laughed.

“Of course she did.”

Nathan looked confused.

“That isn’t bad.”

“It’s extremely Eleanor.”

Even while preparing to reduce family control, Eleanor had still decided what Mara should do next without asking her.

Generous.

Thoughtful.

Controlling.

All at once.

“Do I have to decide now?”

“No.”

Mara already knew.

She declined.

Nathan blinked.

“May I ask why?”

“Because I finally have an apartment nobody can take because I argued with their daughter.”

The hotel job paid less.

The schedule was stable.

Mara had recently been promoted to guest-services operations manager.

Her boss annoyed her in normal ways.

Nobody’s death changed her lease.

Nobody called her “like family.”

She liked that.

Nathan smiled.

“I think Eleanor would be offended.”

“Good.”

Mara kept the letter.

Not because she planned to reconsider.

Because she wanted one piece of Eleanor that proved love did not always know when to stop directing.

Vanessa heard Mara declined.

She called.

“You said no to almost double your salary?”

“Yes.”

“That’s stupid.”

“Possibly.”

Vanessa laughed.

It was the first normal sound between them.

Then she said:

“She would’ve been furious.”

“I know.”

“She’d say you’re wasting your competence.”

“I know.”

They both became quiet.

For a moment Eleanor existed between them as an actual person rather than evidence.

Grant’s settlements finalized soon afterward.

He surrendered disputed Bellweather profits.

Whitmore received reimbursement.

Bellweather implemented conflict restrictions and bought out Grant’s interest.

VGM returned certain fees and surrendered the land option.

Grant resigned from every Whitmore role.

His marriage to Vanessa moved toward divorce.

He blamed her for cooperating.

She blamed him for using her.

Both were partly right.

Both had signed their own documents.

At the final mediation, Grant looked at Mara.

“You started all this.”

Mara almost answered angrily.

Then she thought about the shoe.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Vanessa broke a heel.”

Grant’s expression hardened.

Mara continued.

“Eleanor kept records. You made transactions. Nathan preserved them. The board investigated.”

She looked at him.

“I was standing there.”

Grant had spent years believing whoever controlled the first move controlled the outcome.

May you like

Mara refused to give herself that much power either.
