silent

Chapter 1

The lockers rattled so hard the sound cut through the hallway like a metal scream.

Maya Carter’s back hit the blue steel doors first.

Then her shoulder.

Then the breath left her chest.

She did not cry out.

That made Chloe Vance angrier.

Chloe stood in front of her with perfect hair, a polished school outfit, and the cruel confidence of a girl who had never been told no by anyone who mattered.

Harper moved in from the side and shoved Maya downward.

Maya’s knee dropped close to the floor.

Not all the way.

She caught herself.

Her hands stayed partly hidden inside the sleeves of her oversized gray hoodie.

Avery stepped closer, holding her phone vertically, the camera inches from Maya’s face.

She was smiling.

Excited.

Like this was entertainment.

Chloe grabbed Maya’s hair near the base of her head and yanked sharply, trying to force her lower.

“Say you’re trash.”

Maya flinched.

Her eyes watered from the pain.

But she did not give them the sound they wanted.

Avery pushed the phone closer.

“Or the whole school sees this before lunch.”

The hallway went still in the way school hallways do when everyone knows something wrong is happening and everyone is calculating the price of stepping in.

Maya steadied her breathing.

In through her nose.

Out through her mouth.

Coach Ray’s voice flashed through her mind.

Don’t swing unless you have to. Your power is not the first punch. It’s the choice not to throw one.

Chloe smirked and yanked Maya’s hoodie again.

Harper blocked her side, laughing.

“She’s too scared to fight back.”

Maya lifted her eyes.

Calm.

Locked on Chloe.

“Let go.”

For one second, Chloe hesitated.

Not because she was afraid yet.

Because Maya’s voice did not sound like a victim’s voice.

Then the elevator at the end of the hallway dinged.

The doors slid open.

Three men in black suits stepped out fast.

Not teachers.

Not school security.

Federal agents.

The tallest one froze first.

He saw Chloe’s fist in Maya’s hair.

Saw Harper blocking her body.

Saw Avery’s phone in her face.

His expression drained of color.

The other two agents moved immediately.

Chloe looked over her shoulder.

Her confidence cracked.

“What are they doing here?”

The tallest agent pulled a secure phone from his jacket as he walked.

Chloe released Maya’s hair too late.

Avery lowered the phone.

Maya slowly stood upright, breathing hard but silent.

The agent spoke into the phone, voice low and urgent.

“Sir… we have a situation.”

The agents reached Maya and positioned themselves between her and the girls.

Harper backed into the lockers.

Avery clutched her phone like it had become evidence instead of power.

Chloe stared at Maya, finally understanding that the quiet girl in the hoodie had not been alone.

The tallest agent kept his eyes on Maya.

Then he said the sentence that turned the whole hallway cold.

“They’ve just touched the federal witness’s daughter.”

No one moved.

Maya stood behind the agents, hair loosened, hoodie twisted, one knee aching from the shove.

She looked at Chloe.

Not with fear.

May you like

Not with victory.

With the tired sadness of someone who had been trying so hard to stay invisible and had just become the most dangerous secret in the school.
