Chapter 3 - The Left Side of Her Face

When the officiant pronounced them husband and wife, Elias did not rush the kiss.

He lifted one hand slowly and found her cheek.

The right side first.

Then the left.

His fingertips rested gently against the edge of the birthmark.

Clara stopped breathing for a second.

No one had ever touched that part of her face in public with tenderness.

Not like that.

Not without apology.

Not without trying to prove something.

Elias leaned forward and kissed her softly.

The guests watched.

Some ashamed.

Some crying.

Some finally understanding that beauty had been in front of them all along, but they had been too busy measuring skin to recognize love.

When the kiss ended, Clara’s mother stepped forward.

“Clara,” she whispered.

Clara turned.

Her mother looked smaller than she had that morning. Less polished. Less certain. Her rose dress trembled at the shoulders because her hands were shaking.

“I’m sorry.”

The words landed carefully.

Too small for the years behind them.

But real.

Clara looked at her mother.

“For what?”

Her mother swallowed.

“For letting you learn how to survive it instead of making them stop.”

The garden stayed silent.

Elias did not interrupt.

This was not his apology to receive.

Clara’s eyes filled again.

Her mother continued, voice breaking.

“When you were little, I told you people would get used to it. I told you to be patient. I told you to ignore them.”

She pressed a hand to her mouth, then lowered it.

“I thought I was teaching strength. I was teaching you to carry pain politely.”

Clara’s bouquet lowered slightly.

A tear slipped down the side of her face with the birthmark.

Her mother stepped closer.

“I should have told them to look away if they couldn’t look kindly.”

One of the relatives in the second row shifted uncomfortably.

Good.

Some discomfort arrives as justice.

Clara looked toward the guests.

May you like

Her voice grew clearer.

“I spent my whole life pretending I didn’t hear you.”
