Chapter 8 - THE SISTER WHO CAME BACK

Chloe completed nine years before supervised release.

She requested no contact at first.

Then sent a formal apology through Priya.

Not to Grace.

To me.

I read it.

She named actions specifically.

Lying about the donor egg.

Substituting the contract.

Planning rejection.

Participating in prior failed transfers.

Using my grief after Samuel’s death.

Allowing Ethan to frame the surrogacy as healing.

No request for forgiveness.

I agreed to one meeting.

Public room.

Advocate present.

Chloe looked older.

Plain clothes.

No silk blouse.

No sanitizer.

She said:

“I thought becoming a mother would secure my marriage.”

“You were willing to abandon a child to do it.”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever want Grace?”

“I wanted the idea before she was born. When she became real and female, I wanted the plan to remain more than I wanted her.”

The honesty was brutal.

Necessary.

She asked whether Grace knew about her.

“In age-appropriate ways.”

“Does she hate me?”

“She is six. She is curious.”

“Can I see her?”

“No.”

Chloe nodded.

Later, when Grace was ten, she asked to read Chloe’s first letter.

Then asked:

“Is she my aunt?”

“Biologically, yes.”

“Was she supposed to be my mom?”

“Legally, that was the plan.”

“Did she love me?”

“I don’t know what she felt. I know what she did.”

Grace considered that.

“Can people love and still be unsafe?”

“Yes.”

She chose no meeting.

At fourteen, she changed her mind.

The meeting lasted twenty minutes.

Chloe did not call herself Mom.

Grace asked:

“Why did you wash your hands?”

Chloe cried.

“Because I wanted everyone to believe I rejected you completely.”

“Did you?”

“At that moment, yes.”

Grace looked at me.

Then back at Chloe.

“Thank you for not lying now.”

No hug.

May you like

No relationship promise.

Truth allowed distance to become chosen rather than imposed.
