Chapter 1 - The Catering Girl No One Saw

The champagne hit Elena Vale’s face before the applause from the ballroom even faded.
She had been walking quietly through the Grand Ballroom of Apex Tower with a silver tray balanced in both white-gloved hands.
Golden chandeliers burned above Italian marble.
A string quartet played softly near the white orchids.
Billionaires, board members, heirs, investors, and polished strangers in tuxedos and couture gowns turned their shoulders away from her as if she were furniture carrying drinks.
Elena was used to being unseen.
That was why she had come dressed as catering staff.
Then Cassandra Apex stepped into her path.
Blonde.
Diamond-covered.
Wearing a champagne-colored couture gown that probably cost more than Elena’s first apartment.
She looked Elena up and down with a smile sharp enough to draw blood.
“Careful. People like you ruin expensive rooms.”

Elena stopped.
“Excuse me.”
Cassandra did not move.
Across the ballroom, Conrad Apex, the billionaire host, watched with one hand around a crystal glass. Silver-haired, charming, cold. The kind of man who smiled for cameras and destroyed people in private conference rooms.
Cassandra suddenly shoved Elena hard in the upper chest and shoulder.
The tray flipped upward.
Champagne spilled across Elena’s face, hair, neck, and black uniform.
Crystal glasses tumbled from the silver tray and shattered across the marble floor.
Guests recoiled.
Someone gasped.
Elena stumbled back but did not fall.
Champagne dripped from her chin.
Her dark hair clung to her cheek.
Conrad Apex looked at her as if she had embarrassed him by being humiliated too visibly.
His voice carried through the ballroom.
“Clean yourself up and get out of sight.”
For one second, Elena stood soaked beneath the chandeliers.
Silent.
Breathing.
Then she wiped champagne from one eye.
Slowly, she removed one white glove.
The room watched her now.
That was new.
Elena lifted her phone.
Her voice was calm.
“Someone important already saw everything.”
Conrad gave a short laugh.
It died before it became a sound.
At the ballroom entrance, a legal aide in a dark suit stepped forward holding a sealed folder.
Cassandra’s smile faltered.
Conrad’s glass lowered.
The legal aide walked through the frozen guests and stopped beside Elena.
He opened the folder.
His voice was official.
“The controlling shares transferred at midnight.”
The ballroom went silent.
Elena looked directly at Conrad Apex.
Then at Cassandra.
Champagne still dripped from her uniform, but she no longer looked like staff.
She looked like judgment.
“Now clean up your empire.”
No one moved.
Not the guests.
Not Cassandra.
May you like
Not Conrad.
Because the woman they had ordered out of sight had just become the one person everyone needed to look at.
