Jake’s disciplinary review expanded.
Not because Sarah demanded:

Standard practice after physical misconduct:
look for pattern.
There was one.
Nothing dramatic.
No hidden assaults.
No secret criminal history.
Smaller things.
A recruit reported Jake had once dumped:
someone’s wet laundry
onto a bench because the person left a machine unattended.
Another said Jake mocked:
a sailor’s stutter
during a group exercise.
One instructor had counseled him after he repeatedly interrupted:
a female petty officer
during classroom training.
The counseling note said:
Displays confidence; needs improved professional boundaries and listening discipline.
Everyone had read that as:
correctable immaturity.
Probably accurate.
Then another note:
Responds better to direct authority than peer feedback.
That mattered more.
It meant Jake behaved when:
power was obvious.
Different question when it wasn’t.
Ethan had fewer prior issues.
Mostly:
joining Jake.
Laughing.
Backing bad suggestions.
Noah had none.
Then investigators asked:
Were instructors normalizing aggressive breakfast-hall joking?
Mostly:
no.
But one junior instructor admitted he had seen Jake:
snatch someone’s toast
two weeks earlier.
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
“It seemed harmless.”
Harmless.
A word that accumulates.
The command discovered not:
a toxic base.
Something more ordinary.
