Chapter 7 - Sarah Wanted Revenge Before She Understood What Revenge Would Cost

For several weeks Sarah did not want rehabilitation.
She did not want nuance.
She did not care about adolescent brain development, impulsivity, treatment, remorse, or whether Tyler and Jason could become different people at twenty-five.
She wanted them to hurt.
That was the truth she later admitted without pride.
She imagined them terrified.
Locked away.
Cut off from everything Emma would never have.
When Rebecca talked about juvenile dispositions, Sarah heard mercy.
When therapists talked about grief, she heard surrender.
When people told her vengeance would not bring Emma back, she wanted to scream because of course it wouldn’t. Nothing would.
That was not the point.
The point was that Tyler had laughed.
Jason had laughed.
Emma had been reaching above water.
And they had stood there laughing.
Then Sarah met Caleb.
Not intentionally.
She happened to see him in the prosecutor’s office hallway after his second interview. He was sitting between his parents, pale and small, twisting the sleeve of his sweatshirt.
He looked terrified.
For one second Sarah saw all three children at the lake.
Emma, seven.
Caleb, eleven.
Tyler and Jason, thirteen and fourteen.
Children.
Not equally innocent.
Not equally harmed.
But still children shaped by adults who were supposed to know better.
Sarah did not forgive Tyler or Jason.
She never promised she would.
But she began to understand something important.
If her revenge required pretending they were fully formed monsters rather than children who had done something horrific, she would eventually be lying too.
And Sarah was tired of lies.
So she changed what she wanted.
She wanted the record to say they pushed Emma deliberately.
She wanted the prior threats recognized.
She wanted the adults who suppressed warnings investigated.
She wanted meaningful confinement and treatment for the boys if the juvenile court found it appropriate.
She wanted the club to stop calling Emma’s death an unforeseeable accident.
She wanted no parent ever again to stand beside that dock and be told there had been no warning when there had been one sitting in a missing file.
That became Sarah’s revenge.
Not destruction for its own sake.

Truth with consequences.
