Chapter 1 - The Child in the Ballroom

The Verrone estate grand hall was filled with billionaires, politicians, and the most dangerous crime families in New York. The string quartet played softly. Champagne flowed. Damiano Verrone, the undisputed king of the city's underworld, stood near the center of the room, listening to a corrupt senator beg for a favor.

Then, the music abruptly stopped.

The low hum of conversation completely died out. Hundreds of eyes turned toward the grand marble staircase.

Walking right through the sea of expensive tuxedos and million-dollar evening gowns was a tiny, six-year-old girl. She wore a faded, worn-out blue cotton dress. Her hair was brushed hard into a messy ponytail. In her small, trembling hands, she clutched a piece of folded construction paper with a crooked red heart drawn in crayon.

Rafael Conti, Damiano’s lethal right-hand man, instinctively reached inside his jacket, his eyes scanning for a threat.

But the child didn't stop. She walked straight up to Damiano Verrone. The man who had ordered the execution of rival bosses without blinking looked down at the tiny girl standing at his expensive leather shoes.

The entire room held its breath. People expected Damiano to coldly signal his guards to throw the child out.

Instead, the little girl looked up, her bright blue eyes welling with terrified tears.

"Excuse me, sir," she whispered, her voice trembling but echoing in the absolute silence of the room. "Can I borrow you as my daddy... just for one day?"

Damiano didn't move. He didn't speak. He just stared at the girl, his dark, calculating eyes searching her face. He recognized her. This was Lily, the daughter of Elena, one of his estate housekeepers.

"Why do you need a daddy, piccola?" Damiano asked, his deep, resonant voice entirely devoid of its usual lethal edge.

Lily swallowed hard, holding up the crumpled piece of paper. "Because tomorrow is Father-Daughter Day at my school. The mean lady who manages the house told my mommy that if I don't have a dad, they're going to kick me out of the school. Mommy is crying in the kitchen."

👉 Who is the "mean lady," and what cruel game has she been playing in Damiano's house?
