Chapter 5 - The King's Judgment
The grand hall of the Verrone estate felt like a graveyard. The crime bosses and politicians watched in absolute silence. In their world, stealing from the boss was a death sentence. Stealing from the widow of a made man who died protecting the boss? That was a crime that demanded a brutal, public reckoning.
Beatrice collapsed to her knees on the marble floor. Her expensive silk dress pooled around her as she began to openly sob.
"Please, Mr. Verrone!" Beatrice begged, crawling toward him. "I'll give it all back! Every penny! Just let me walk away! Don't kill me!"
Damiano looked down at the pathetic, greedy woman. He had killed men for much less. He could simply nod his head, and Rafael would drag Beatrice to the basement, never to be seen again.
But Damiano looked at little Lily, who was watching him with wide, innocent eyes. He couldn't unleash a monster in front of the child of the man who saved him.
"I'm not going to kill you, Beatrice," Damiano said coldly.
Beatrice let out a massive, hysterical gasp of relief. "Oh, thank you, sir! Thank you!"
"Rafael," Damiano continued smoothly. "Freeze all of Beatrice's bank accounts. Seize her cars, her condo, and all her assets. Liquidate everything and transfer it directly to Elena's name."
"You can't do that!" Beatrice shrieked, panic completely overwhelming her. "That's everything I have!"
"You have nothing," Damiano corrected her. "You stole from a widow. You humiliated a child. You are leaving this estate tonight with the clothes on your back. And if I ever see your face in this city again, I will let Don Silvio handle you."
At the mention of his name, the brutal Don Silvio Marchetti smiled a terrifying, gold-toothed smile from across the room.
Beatrice scrambled to her feet, crying hysterically, and sprinted out the massive front doors, fleeing into the cold, rainy night with absolutely nothing to her name.
