Chapter 11 - THE MARRIAGE CASE

Ending a marriage that had lasted fourteen hours before the rupture turned out to be legally more complicated than emotionally ending it. My family lawyer, Maya Chen, explained that annulment was not automatic just because Julian concealed a financial motive. Fraud had to go to the essence of the marriage under state law, and courts were careful about turning every ugly deception into a retroactive non-marriage.
So we filed alternative claims. Annulment if the evidence supported it.
Divorce if not. Julian initially contested annulment.
Not because he wanted me back. Because an annulment built on fraudulent inducement could become devastating evidence in the property litigation.
Then discovery produced his messages with Victoria from before our first date. VICTORIA: Meet her naturally.
JULIAN: This is insane. VICTORIA: It is dinner.
JULIAN: With a target. That word hurt more than I expected.
Target. Then three weeks later: JULIAN: Stop calling her target.
VICTORIA: Then stop acting sentimental. JULIAN: I like her.
Then months later: VICTORIA: Claire won’t sell. Susan branch may be easier through Elena.
JULIAN: Do not involve Elena in Rowan. Victoria: You already are.
There. The contamination started early.
Then the proposal. VICTORIA: Don’t propose until Rowan issue is resolved.
JULIAN: I’m proposing because I want to. VICTORIA: Convenient.
JULIAN: Go to hell. That mattered.
Not enough to save us. Enough to make the truth messier.
Julian did love me by then. He also knew his mother saw marriage as a tool.
He proposed without telling me. Then after our engagement: VICTORIA: Once she’s Hale, ratification gets easier.
JULIAN: We’re not discussing Elena’s assets. Victoria: You’re marrying the asset.
Julian did not answer for twelve hours. Then: JULIAN: I’m marrying Elena.
The message almost broke me. Because it sounded sincere.
And sincerity did not make concealment harmless. Maya said, “Do not ask the court to tell you which feeling was real.”
Good. The law could decide whether consent to marriage was legally compromised.
It could not measure love. Then Julian stopped contesting annulment.
Why? He filed a sworn declaration.
I knew my mother originally wanted contact with Elena because of Everett Hale’s bloodline. I concealed that fact. I later loved Elena independently of that purpose. I also knowingly benefited from Rowan Yard after learning there was a serious problem with her purported signature.
No euphemism. No blame.
The declaration made his civil position worse. His lawyers were furious.
Why do it? He told Maya, “Because if I keep fighting the truth to protect my case, I’m still doing what Mom taught me.”
That was probably the first adult thing he did after the wedding. Still too late.
The court granted an annulment based on stipulated fraud facts without declaring every part of our relationship false. Fourteen hours became legally nothing.
Emotionally, it remained almost two years of dating, an engagement, a wedding, and one morning that exposed everything. When the decree arrived, I cried.
Not because I wanted Julian back. Because I remembered him dancing with me beneath white roses.
“I can’t believe you’re my wife,” he had whispered. I believed that moment was real.
Then the next morning he threw a filthy rag in my face. Also real.
Two truths. Then Maya handed me my restored passport paperwork under Elena Mercer.
The same passport I had shown in the foyer when Julian said I would leave with nothing. I left with my name.
My career. My legal rights.
And one question still unanswered. Who had paid the investigator who first traced my mother to Everett?
May you like
The invoice had not come from Victoria. It had come from Northstar Recovery in Montreal.
Everett’s company. He had helped start the chain that brought Julian to me.
