Chapter 8 - CLAIRE’S RELEASE
Claire Rowan was sixty-one, retired, sharp, and completely unimpressed by Hale wealth. She joined our meeting by video.
“I took money,” she said before anyone accused her. In 1999, Victoria offered Claire $200,000 to release claims arising from Everett’s trust.
Claire accepted after her apartment was burglarized and Everett’s letters were stolen. She was scared.
Her release, however, covered certain company shares, not Rowan Yard. Victoria later treated it as global.
Why? Because nobody challenged.
Then Claire said my father helped her. Robert recovered $200,000 from a Hale escrow years later and transferred it to Claire because he believed Victoria had underpaid her branch.
That explained the mysterious check in Dad’s records. Again, Victoria had framed obligation as bribery.
Then Claire produced Everett’s original trust. Rowan Yard was divided sixty percent to Susan’s descendants, forty percent to Claire’s branch if Everett failed to return within ten years.
Why sixty-forty? Susan was older and had been acknowledged first.
Ugly family logic. Still.
If valid, my mother’s branch held sixty percent beneficial interest before later amendments. But my mother had assigned part of her interest to me through estate planning years earlier.
We needed accounting. Then the biggest clause: No beneficiary release is effective unless separately represented by counsel unaffiliated with Hale entities.
Claire’s 1999 attorney was paid by Hale Development. Conflict.
Her release might be voidable. My mother never signed any release.
My signature on the modern transfer was forged. Victoria’s title position weakened dramatically.
Then Claire asked Julian one question. “Did you contact me two years ago?”
He said yes. I looked at him.
He had never told me. Julian had offered Claire a buyout at independent appraised value before proposing to me.
Why? He wanted to solve Rowan without involving me.
Claire refused because she wanted Everett’s disappearance explained first. Then she showed us his email.
IF ELENA LEARNS BEFORE MOM RESOLVES TITLE, SHE WILL NEVER TRUST ME. He knew.
Then another: I AM NOT MARRYING HER FOR PROPERTY ANYMORE. Claire replied: THEN TELL HER.
Julian never did. I looked at him.
“Why?” He answered, “Because by then I knew telling you would end us.”
There. Love used as justification for continuing deception.
I said, “You chose having me over letting me choose you.” He closed his eyes.
That sentence landed harder than any accusation. Then Claire told us Everett might still be alive.
I almost laughed. Of course.
But she had evidence. Postcards from Canada for three years after his supposed disappearance.
Then nothing. One card mentioned a company called Northstar Recovery.
Daniel searched modern corporate records. Northstar existed.
Owner: Edward Rowan. Age eighty-seven.
Living outside Montreal. Same birth month as Everett.
Different year on paper. Could be coincidence.
We did not declare miracle. We requested verification through counsel.
Two weeks later, Edward Rowan agreed to a DNA comparison with Claire. The result arrived in a sealed lab report.

And he had watched Victoria trace me toward Julian without ever warning me himself.
