Chapter 2 - THE WRONG PATIENT

Inside the ambulance, Vanessa stopped pretending.
The moment paramedics tried to examine her ankle, she pulled away.
“I said I’m fine.”
Daniel’s assistant, Ethan Price, stood near the rear doors.
He had been riding in the front seat.
He looked confused.
“Then why did Commander Whitmore insist—”
Vanessa glared at him.
“Because he understood the priority.”
The paramedic turned.
“What priority?”
No one answered.
Outside, the blockade tightened.
Police lights flashed through dust.
Daniel remained on the ground, one hand over his jaw.
Grant turned toward the paramedic team.
“My grandson needs immediate care.”
A doctor from the helicopter unit examined Mason.
“Severe fever, possible respiratory infection, dehydration, shock.”
“Can he fly?”
“Yes.”
Emily tried to stand.
Pain stopped her.
Grant saw.
“You’re going too.”
“I’m fine.”
“You are bleeding through your dress.”
Emily looked down.
A dark stain spread near her ribs.
She had not noticed.
The helicopter medic moved quickly.
Grant carried Mason toward the landing zone while responders supported Emily.
Daniel pushed himself up.
“You cannot take my family.”
Grant turned.
“You abandoned them.”
“I made a triage decision.”
“No. You made a choice.”
Vanessa stepped from the ambulance.
She was walking normally.
Every nearby responder noticed.
Daniel looked at her.
For the first time, uncertainty appeared.
“Vanessa?”
She brushed dust from her skirt.
“The ambulance was blocked. I got out.”
“You said you couldn’t walk.”
“I said my ankle hurt.”
The lie was already changing shape.
A police officer approached.
“Sir, we need statements from everyone.”
Daniel pointed at Emily.
“She panicked. She fell.”
Grant’s eyes narrowed.
Emily understood what was happening.
Daniel was beginning the story before the evidence settled.
He always did.
Arguments at home followed the same structure.
Cause disappeared.
Reaction remained.
Daniel provoked.
Emily cried.
Then he called her unstable.
Daniel vanished for hours.
Emily demanded answers.
Then he called her controlling.
He emptied accounts.
Emily asked questions.
Then he called her paranoid.
Now the earthquake had created the perfect chaos.
He believed chaos could erase sequence.
Grant looked toward the damaged hotel.
“Preserve every exterior camera.”
A rescue captain nodded.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You don’t control this site.”
Grant looked at him.
“I built half the emergency infrastructure being used to save these people.”
“That does not make you law enforcement.”
“No.”
Grant glanced toward the police officer.
“But leaving a feverish child under collapsing concrete while stealing an ambulance will interest them.”
Daniel’s face changed.
He looked toward Vanessa.
She looked away.
Emily saw it.
Not guilt.
Calculation.
Grant had known Daniel was selfish.
He had not known how deeply Vanessa was involved.
The helicopter lifted with Emily and Mason aboard.
Through the open side window, Emily looked down.
Daniel stood beside the ambulance.
Vanessa several feet away.
Grant between them.
The ruined hotel behind everyone.
She expected Daniel to look at his son.
He looked at Vanessa.
That was the moment Emily understood the betrayal was larger than abandonment.
Daniel had not made a panicked decision.
May you like
He and Vanessa had been trying to reach something inside the ambulance.
Something worth more to them than Mason’s life.
