Chapter 6 - THE FATHER AND THE SON

Daniel requested a meeting with Grant.

No lawyers.

No agents.

Grant agreed only with federal monitoring.

They met inside a hospital conference room.

Daniel’s face remained bruised from the punch.

Grant sat across from him.

Emily watched through one-way glass with Agent Reed.

Daniel began first.

“You embarrassed me in front of everyone.”

Grant said nothing.

“You hit me.”

“You swung first.”

“You always wanted a reason.”

“No.”

Grant leaned forward.

“I wanted a son who did not make one necessary.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“There he is.”

“Who?”

“The man who thinks disappointment is parenting.”

Grant’s face changed.

Daniel continued.

“You built a company and called it a family. Every dinner was an evaluation. Every birthday was a performance. I learned early that being loved meant winning.”

Grant did not interrupt.

Some of it was true.

That made the rest more dangerous.

Daniel said, “I chose Vanessa because she believed in me.”

“She believed in access.”

“Emily believed in weakness.”

“Emily believed in your potential.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Grant continued.

“You punished her for seeing what you refused to become.”

Daniel looked toward the glass.

He knew Emily was watching.

“Tell her I saved the company.”

“You destroyed a hotel.”

“The earthquake destroyed it.”

“You approved the weakness.”

“Everyone signs risk.”

“Not with other people’s bodies.”

Daniel stood.

“This is your fault.”

Grant did not move.

“I know some of it is.”

Daniel stopped.

That answer disarmed him.

Grant continued.

“I taught you approval was conditional. I confused pressure with preparation. I made achievement feel like oxygen.”

Emily listened.

Grant did not erase his responsibility.

He also did not accept Daniel’s crimes.

“But I did not teach you to leave a sick child under rubble.”

Daniel looked away.

“I knew the helicopter was coming.”

Grant’s face changed.

“What?”

“I knew your team was inbound.”

Emily felt cold.

Daniel had tracked Grant’s rescue response.

He left them believing someone else would arrive.

Grant asked, “How long?”

“Minutes.”

“Mason could have died in seconds.”

“He didn’t.”

Grant stood.

The chair moved sharply backward.

For one second, Emily thought he would strike again.

He did not.

He stepped close.

“That sentence is why you are no longer my son in any way that gives you power.”

Daniel laughed.

“You cannot erase blood.”

“No.”

Grant’s voice remained calm.

“But I can stop rewarding it.”

He left.

Inside the observation room, Emily realized the deepest punishment was not the frozen accounts.

Not the arrest.

May you like

Not the board removal.

It was Grant refusing to let biology become authority.
