Chapter 1 - Who Are You Trying to Warn?

David slammed his eight-month-pregnant wife into a checkout counter because she tried to buy a fourteen-dollar baby blanket.

The folded blue blanket sat on the conveyor belt with the price tag still visible.

$14.

That was all.

Fourteen dollars for something soft enough to wrap around a newborn.

But David snatched it from the belt like she had tried to steal from him.

“We’re not wasting my money on this!”

Then he grabbed Nora’s upper arm, pivoted sharply, and drove her belly-first into the padded edge of the checkout counter.

Nora gasped.

The sound was not loud.

That made it worse.

Her knees buckled, and she dropped to one knee, one hand clutching the bottom of her eight-month belly while the other gripped the metal side of the checkout lane.

Shoppers froze under the fluorescent lights.

The cashier covered her mouth.

The checkout monitor kept glowing.

The security camera above the lane kept watching.

David raised his open hand for another strike.

He never finished it.

A huge red-bearded man in a black polo charged from the front of the store.

Wyatt, the store manager, caught David’s wrist mid-swing, twisted the arm safely behind his back, and drove him chest-first against the checkout counter with one controlled movement.

“You’re done touching her.”

David cursed, struggling.

Wyatt tightened his grip.

Not enough to injure him.

Enough to make the message clear.

Nora leaned against the counter, crying now, both hands over her stomach.

“My baby,” she whispered. “Something’s wrong.”

Wyatt’s face changed instantly.

He kept one hand on David’s shirt and lifted the other toward the cashier.

“Call 911. Now. Tell them eight months pregnant, abdominal impact, possible distress.”

David stopped fighting long enough to reach secretly for his phone.

The screen lit in his palm.

A message appeared.

They found the account…

David’s face drained of color.

His eyes snapped upward toward the security camera.

Wyatt saw it.

His voice dropped.

“Who are you trying to warn?”

David’s hand closed around the phone.

Nora looked from his pale face to the camera.

For the first time since he shoved her, the fear in the checkout lane shifted.

It was no longer only hers.

It was his.
