The bright big-box store checkout lane.
The fluorescent lights.
The blue baby blanket with the $14 tag.
David snatching it from the conveyor.

His hand gripping Nora’s upper arm.
The sharp pivot.
The shove into the padded counter.
Nora dropping to one knee, clutching her stomach.
David raising his hand again.
Wyatt charging in.
Catching the wrist.
Twisting the arm safely behind David’s back.
You’re done touching her.
Nora whispering, My baby… something’s wrong.
David secretly reaching for his phone.
The glowing message.
They found the account…
