Chapter 10 - Olivia Remembered the Envelope

Children remember oddly specific things.
Not the adult meaning of a moment—but its shape, color, and sound.
Three days after the study confrontation, Olivia came into my office carrying her teddy bear and said:
“The envelope was in the knight.”
I stared at her.
“The what?”
She pointed toward the hall.
“The knight man.”
The antique armor.
I nearly swore out loud.
During the chaos, the armor had collapsed around Marina.
The notebook had flown loose.
But no one had searched every piece afterward because our attention had gone to the obvious item.
I took Olivia with me—not into the scene itself, but to the doorway of the study while my staff carefully reassembled the armor pieces on a rug.
Inside the hollow torso plate, tucked behind the inner metal lining, was a thin sealed white envelope.
The seal had already been broken once and then pressed closed again.
Someone had looked inside before.
I didn’t open it immediately.
I checked the surface first.
On the back, in Isabella’s handwriting, were five words:
For Salvatore, If Necessary.
My hands shook.
Olivia looked up at me.
“Mommy hid it there when I was coloring.”
That was why she had known.
That was why she had said Mommy told me never to let Edmund find it.
She hadn’t understood the documents.
But she had seen the hiding place.

And her mother had turned that moment into a promise.
