Chapter 12 - Isabella’s Death Became a Different Question

Until then, I had forced myself not to weaponize grief with suspicion.
Plenty of horrible accidents are only accidents.
Plenty of widowers destroy themselves asking whether every tragedy must have a villain.
But once the forged-will evidence surfaced, the investigators reopened the file around Isabella’s crash to review it alongside new statements.
Her car had gone off a wet curve.
No brake failure had been reported at the time.
No direct sign of tampering had been found.
Still, new questions emerged.
Why had Edmund called twice that afternoon, according to recovered phone records?
Why had Marina lied initially about seeing Isabella before she left?
Why had Isabella written one final line in the notebook only hours before her death:
If he knows I copied the papers, I am in real danger now.
The investigation moved carefully. I refused to make claims beyond the evidence.
That mattered.
I would not turn my wife’s death into a dramatic fantasy just because the truth was ugly enough already.
But it was no longer unreasonable to ask whether Isabella had been frightened for a reason.
And if she had died without ever getting those papers to me, then my duty was no longer just to mourn her.

It was to finish what she started.
