Chapter 1 - The Phone Lit Up Before He Could Hide It

Dominic Cross walked into Audrey’s hospital room still trying to hide the phone in his hand.

He was too late.

The screen lit up before he turned it over.

A beach photo.

Dominic shirtless under bright sun.

His arm around Paige Keller.

His mouth pressed against hers.

Audrey saw it from the hospital bed.

She was sitting upright against white pillows, one eye bruised and swollen, her short blonde hair messy against her pale face. A hospital bracelet circled her wrist. Her hands gripped the blanket over her stomach like she was holding herself together by force.

Beside her stood Dr. Alexander Reed.

White coat.

Stethoscope.

Gray-blond hair.

Controlled fury in his eyes.

In his hand was an ultrasound image.

Dominic looked from Audrey to the doctor and gave a bitter laugh.

“She fell. Don’t turn this into a performance.”

Audrey did not speak.

Her eyes moved slowly from the phone to Dominic’s face.

Not quickly.

Not dramatically.

Slowly, like her heart needed one final second to understand what her mind already knew.

Paige appeared in the doorway behind him, glamorous and uncomfortable, still dressed like someone who had not expected to enter a hospital room where a wife was bleeding emotionally under daylight.

Dr. Reed lifted the ultrasound image between Dominic and Audrey.

His jaw tightened before he spoke.

“She didn’t just fall, Dominic. She lost your child.”

Dominic froze.

The phone lowered in his hand.

Paige went pale.

Audrey closed her eyes for one painful second.

When she opened them again, something inside her had changed.

The woman who had spent two years begging Dominic to love her properly was gone.

The woman in the bed was hurt.

Bruised.

Grieving.

But no longer pleading.

Her hand moved to the sealed divorce papers beside her.

She pushed them toward the edge of the bed.

Her voice was soft.

Devastating.

“Enjoy the family you chose.”

Dominic’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Dr. Reed looked down at the medical file, then back at him.

His voice dropped.

“And your fertility tests confirm there won’t be another one.”

The phone slipped from Dominic’s hand and hit the hospital floor.

Paige took one step backward from the doorway.

Audrey sat straighter in the bed, one hand resting on the divorce papers, her bruised face calm in a way that made Dominic look suddenly small.

He finally whispered her name.

“Audrey.”

She looked at him.

Barely above a whisper, she said, “You lost us before you ever knew we existed.”

That was the moment Dominic Cross realized the room did not contain his wife anymore.

It contained the end of every lie he had told himself.
