Chapter 1 - She Came to End Him

Harper was kneeling on the white marble aisle when her father pointed at her ruined hair and shouted.
“Wear the hat like we told you—stop humiliating your sister!”
Five hundred guests stared.
Not at the bride.
Not at the billionaire groom.
At Harper.
Her once waist-length red hair was gone.
Brutally chopped while she slept.
Uneven shaved patches exposed pale skin. Jagged red clumps stuck out around her ears and neck. No stylist could have made it look accidental. No hat could have made it disappear.
A clear evidence pouch lay near her knee, filled with severed red hair.
In one shaking hand, Harper held rolled legal documents.
In the other, she held the pouch.
She did not cry.
That frightened her father more than tears would have.
In front of her, the seven-year-old ring bearer knelt in his tiny black tuxedo, both hands gently holding her face.
He looked into her eyes, confused and terrified.
“Aunt Harper,” he whispered, too softly for the guests to hear. “Who hurt you?”
Harper wanted to answer.
But her throat closed.
Behind them, Chloe screamed through running mascara while two police officers held her back near the floral arch.
Her white couture wedding gown shook as she struggled.
“This was supposed to be my perfect day!”

Their mother stood frozen on the church steps, clutching the wide-brimmed hat she had tried to force onto Harper’s head minutes earlier.
Hide it, she had whispered.
For once in your life, don’t ruin something for your sister.
Now the hat hung uselessly in her trembling hands.
Police lights flashed red and blue through the white floral arch.
Rose petals scattered across the marble.
A cruiser blocked the estate entrance.
And near the altar, the Sterling groom dropped to one knee.
The billionaire heir Chloe had fought so hard to marry was no longer smiling.
His navy wedding suit looked suddenly too expensive for the fear in his face.
A siren burst through the frozen air.
Two fraud investigators in dark suits moved through the arch with badges visible and sealed folders in their hands.
The guests turned their phones away from Harper.
Toward the altar.
The lead investigator’s voice cut through the luxury ceremony.
“Federal fraud division. Step away from the altar.”
Harper’s father stopped pointing.
Chloe stopped screaming for half a second.
The groom looked at Harper.
Not at the officers.
Not at the guests.
At Harper.

As if he finally understood that the woman kneeling on the aisle with her chopped hair exposed had not come to beg.
She had come to end him.
