Chapter 7 - Red Thread
The assault investigation against her parents and Chloe moved separately.
Chloe claimed she only wanted Harper to wear the hat.
Her mother claimed she panicked after discovering the hair already cut.
Her father claimed he knew nothing until the ceremony.
Then the stylist accepted a plea and explained the truth.
Chloe had cried that Harper was going to ruin everything.
Their mother had suggested “just making sure she has to cover it.”
Their father had paid cash and told the stylist, “Do it while she’s sleeping. She won’t make a scene if everyone is already here.”
The stylist had done it.
Then vomited in the service bathroom afterward.
Guilt, Harper learned, does not undo harm.
But testimony helps.
Chloe avoided jail through cooperation but received probation, community service, mandatory counseling, and a restraining order.
Her parents faced misdemeanor assault-related charges, civil liability, and public disgrace in the very social world they tried to impress.
Grant went to federal prison.
The Sterling name survived in buildings, trusts, and plaques, but not in the way he wanted.
Harper sold her shares in the family investment office and started her own forensic accounting firm.
She named it Red Thread.
At first, people thought the name referred to her hair.
It did partly.
But mostly it referred to the line connecting hidden things.
Fake invoices.
Family lies.
Power disguised as tradition.
Money moved through beautiful rooms.
Harper became very good at finding the thread and pulling until the whole costume came apart.
Her hair grew back slowly.
Awkwardly.
Uneven for months.
She considered shaving it all off once, just to make it her choice.
Then she did.
One clean cut.
One quiet morning.
No audience.
No hat.
No apology.
When it grew again, she kept it shorter than before.
Not because they took the old length.
Because she no longer needed a former version of herself to prove she had survived.
The little ring bearer remained in her life.
His parents apologized for not stepping in sooner.
Harper accepted the apology only after they answered his question honestly.
Why was everybody mad at her?
Because grown-ups were protecting the wrong thing.
