Chapter 1 - Close Your Eyes, Little Star

Victor smiled when Adrian Blackwell walked into the ruined room and saw his sister hanging from the ceiling.

That smile was the first thing Adrian wanted to break.

Not Victor’s jaw.

Not his ribs.

Not yet.

The smile.

It sat on Victor’s face like he had planned the moment carefully.

The abandoned office smelled of mold, old paper, dust, and rain leaking through cracked windows. Peeling walls surrounded a broken desk. Files and books were scattered across the floor. An old couch sagged against the far wall.

And in the center of a harsh shaft of daylight, Elena hung by her bound wrists.

Her bare feet barely touched the dirty floor.

Her white blouse was torn loose at the waist. Her dark skirt was wrinkled and stained. Bruises marked her arms and legs. Silver tape covered her mouth. Her dark hair clung in damp, tangled strands to her tear-streaked face.

The rope above her creaked softly.

Adrian stopped dead.

Behind him, three men in black coats filled the doorway in silence.

Victor leaned against the broken desk, expensive coat open, arrogance written across every inch of him.

“She belongs to me,” Victor said.

Elena lifted her head.

At first, her eyes were glassy with terror.

Then she recognized Adrian.

Something broke across her face.

Not relief exactly.

Relief was too small a word.

It was the look of someone who had been drowning quietly and suddenly saw land.

Adrian slowly removed one black glove.

Then the other.

He never looked away from Elena.

“No,” he said quietly. “She’s my blood.”

Victor pushed off the desk and stepped forward.

His confidence filled the room like smoke.

“You’re outnumbered.”

Adrian’s expression did not change.

Only his jaw tightened once.

He glanced toward the doorway behind Victor.

Then back to him.

“Only in this room.”

Victor’s smirk flickered.

Elena’s breathing turned ragged behind the tape.

Adrian took one slow step closer.

No hurry.

No wasted movement.

The room seemed to shrink around him.

One of Victor’s men near the window shifted uneasily.

Adrian looked up at Elena.

For the first time since he entered, the ice in his face cracked by a fraction.

Not enough for Victor to use.

Enough for Elena to see.

Her eyes filled.

Adrian raised one hand slightly.

A signal.

Small.

Controlled.

“Close your eyes, little star.”

Elena obeyed.

Her eyes squeezed shut as tears slipped beneath the silver tape.

Victor looked from Adrian’s raised hand to the three silent men at the door.

Then to the dirty windows.

Then to the hallway behind him.

And finally, finally, his confidence began to die.

Because men like Victor only feel powerful when they believe every exit belongs to them.

May you like

Adrian had not walked into a trap.

He had walked into a room Victor no longer controlled.
