Chapter 4 - The Dead Place

So he placed someone near Victor’s circle.

Not inside the home.

Never Elena’s private life.

But close enough to see patterns.

Victor’s driver changed.

His assistant quit.

A housekeeper disappeared from the payroll.

A doctor known for “discreet domestic care” visited the townhouse twice.

Adrian waited.

Gathered.

Watched.

Then Elena vanished.

Not completely.

That would have been too easy to name.

Victor called Adrian himself.

His voice was smooth.

“Elena is taking time away.”

“Where?”

“A wellness retreat.”

Adrian said nothing.

Victor continued.

“She’s been emotionally unstable. I know that’s hard for you to hear.”

“Put her on.”

“She doesn’t want contact.”

“Put. Her. On.”

A sigh.

“This is exactly why she needed distance. You overwhelm her.”

Adrian hung up.

Within ten minutes, all three men who now stood behind him in the abandoned room were moving.

Jonah checked the townhouse cameras.

Mason traced Victor’s car.

Reid pulled private medical billing, flight records, shell company property leases, and cell tower pings.

By midnight, Adrian had the first real lead.

Victor’s car had visited an abandoned office building owned by an inactive LLC tied to Langley asset recovery.

A dead place.

No staff.

No active utilities.

No reason for a billionaire’s husband to go there at 2:13 in the morning.

Adrian drove himself.

No police.

Not yet.

He had learned long ago that involving law too early warned men who had lawyers on speed dial.

The building sat at the edge of an industrial strip in New Jersey, rainwater pooled in potholes outside, windows broken, loading dock chained.

Victor had brought two guards.

Adrian brought three men who did not talk unless necessary.

By the time Victor realized the hallway outside the room had gone silent, Adrian was already at the door.

The first guard outside went down without a shout.

The second surrendered after seeing Jonah’s face.

The third was smart enough to walk away.

Then Adrian opened the room.

Now Elena hung in the shaft of dirty daylight with tape over her mouth and rope cutting into her wrists.

Victor thought the sight would make Adrian reckless.

That was his mistake.

Adrian’s rage did not explode.

It narrowed.

He looked at Elena’s hands.

Blue at the knuckles but moving.

Good.

Breathing shallow but steady.

Good.

Rope tied high, weight distributed badly.

Dangerous.

Victor within reach.

Three exits.

Two windows.

One broken desk.

No visible firearm.

Victor’s right hand too close to his coat pocket.

Adrian raised his hand.

May you like

Close your eyes, little star.

Elena closed them.
