Chapter 4 - The Truth, Not Entertainment

She opened her eyes and looked at her mother.

“You don’t get to meet my daughter.”

Diane recoiled.

“You don’t mean that.”

“Yes,” Amelia said. “I do.”

Kyle laughed nervously.

“Come on, Amy. That’s dramatic.”

Ethan turned to him.

“Her name is Amelia.”

Kyle went quiet.

Diane began crying again.

This time, nobody moved toward her.

That was when she realized tears had lost their job.

Ethan escorted Diane and Kyle to the gate while Mara helped Amelia into a wicker chair with dry towels beneath her. The guests began cleaning the patio quietly, gently, as if restoring order could apologize for what they had witnessed.

One older neighbor, Mrs. Bell, placed her envelope back into the donation box and said to Amelia, “For your baby. Only your baby.”

Then another guest did the same.

Then another.

By the time Mara brought the box inside, every envelope had a name written across the back.

Not for Diane.

Not for Kyle.

For Baby Carter.

Later that night, after the doctor confirmed the baby was okay, Ethan uploaded the camera footage into a secure file.

Amelia sat beside him on the couch, wrapped in a blanket, one hand on her belly.

“Don’t post it,” she whispered.

Ethan looked at her.

“I won’t.”

“I don’t want revenge online.”

“I know.”

“I just don’t want her to lie anymore.”

He squeezed her hand.

“Then we keep it for truth, not entertainment.”

That sentence became their rule.

The footage was not posted publicly.

But it was shown where it mattered.

To the family members Diane called crying that night.

To the relatives who accused Amelia of banning her mother over “one little accident.”

To the church friend Diane told that Amelia had “thrown herself on the ground for sympathy.”

To the lawyer Ethan hired when Diane threatened grandparent rights before the baby was even born.

Every time Diane lied, Ethan sent the clip.

Diane shoving the dessert table.

Amelia slipping.

Diane pointing.

She caused this herself!

Then the second clip.

A baby who isn’t even here yet doesn’t need cash more than a living son.

People stopped calling Amelia dramatic after that.

Some apologized.

May you like

Some disappeared.

Both were useful.
